Need a Spot
Hi, my '88 2.6L auto runs fine but now the engine dies when I brake as the car is coming to a stop but is still moving. What should I be looking for? I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything - search words? Thanks.

You should be looking for the hood release lever <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

You got to give us more to go on. When did the problem start? Does it just die instantly or does it sputter. Did you recently do anything to the truck? Does it run fine and otherwise have good power? When was the last tune up?

1. Carb float level
2. large leak in vacuum in brake booster

where is the hood release lever? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

OK, it kind of just dies as the brake is applied; no sputtering. The engine runs fine and has good power otherwise. All new tune-up parts. I did rebuild the carb during the winter, and I think everything is OK there as I was careful with the float, but I also remember that this started happening before I rebuilt the carb. How can I check if it the float? Thanks.

My old CJ7 had the exact same problem and it was a vacuum leak in the brake system = a bugger to figure out since it runs fine in the shop.

Check the vacuum brake booster hose, It's the 1/2 inch one that connects to the manifold between the carb and the firewall. It's OEM only item and likes to crack at the connection point.

does the motor shut off when you put your clutch in at higher speeds( higher rpm's ), i had this problem and it was fixed when i replaced the emissions control unit and oxygen sensor.
