Can someone point me in the direction on how to check and even adjust the timing on my 89 22RE. I've never done it before. It just recently started stalling on me after it gets warmed up. I originally thought the TPS and decided to change it. We'll I think I jumped the gun. I guess I should have checked the timing first. Also, I could not get the new TPS calibrated to <2.3 ohms like another write up says. The best I could do was 5.8 ohms. Maybe I did something wrong? The old TPS was giving me a reading of 31.1 ohms at best. Any help would be great. Thanks...

Check your meter's resistance range. The <2.3 reading is 2.3Kohms (i.e 2300 ohms):

For timing, once the TPS is reading under 2300 ohms at idle, install the timing check jumper and use a timing light to set the timing (by rotating the distr.) to 5 BTDC.

How do you actually use the timing light?

Typically hook the pickup to the #1 spark plug wire and shine the light onto the timing marks on the crank pulley.

Their are different configuratioins to timing lights, but they are more straight forward than they seem at firsat glance.

Usually your timing light will have 3 wires coming off it.

Pos and neg (red and black) go to the batt terminals.

The third clip goes on the spak plug wire from the #1 cylinder to the distributor cap.

Jumper the check T and E1 spots on your check connectors (on 85/86 and earlier it is a round plug on the driver side of the engine compartment that just plugs into a rubber cap, on 87 or later it is a rectangular box (1.25 by 1 by .75 in?) next to the main fuse box on the passenger side of the engine compartment).

start the engine (make sure no timing light wires dangle into your fan!!!).

aim the timing light at the crank pulley to see where th notch comes up.

rotate the distrib slightly to either advance your spark in relation to the crank or to ease off of it. you mentioned a tps earlier so i guess you have an efi engine? probably your timing mark should be about at the 5 mark on the little numbered lobe hanging over the crrank pulley.

key things: watch your fingers around all those moving parts and read your Haynes/CHilton manual carefully.

Thanks, that was a big help. Just one more question on the same subject. How do I "jumper the check T an E1 spots"? Once someone explains it to me, I usually pick it up fairly quick.

Thanks again....

We'll I am officialy an idiot since I said I catch on quick in an earlier post. I went out and rented a timing light so I could check and possibly adjust my timing. Before I did anything, I gave the engine bay a once over so I knew where everything was that I would need to do. I found the test block where I would have to jump the T and E1 connections, but I dont know which ones are T and E1. Are they marked somewhere? I also have no clue how your supposed to rotate the distributor. All I see are the two bolts that hold the cap in place. I thought, maybe I need to loosen the bolts and turn the cap slightly. I tried that but the cap will not move in either direction. I assumed there would be some kind of screw that you would turn in one direction on the cap to adjust timing. And finally, I can see no markings of any kind on the crank pulley or the block that would indicate where 5deg. would be assuming I figured out the rest (granted, at this point I have not hooked up the timing light yet. I saw no need to since I was this lost).

Any more help would be appreciated" <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Thanks........

Inside the cap that 'unclips' from the diagnotic check connector there is a 'key diagram' to show which hole relates to whicjh connnection. i think the 't' is the center and the 'e1' is in one corner....but the diagnostic box could be rotated so i can't say which corner for sure, but probably if you ar standing facing the engine comptmt with belly against the radiator, the e1 will be the top right of the little grid of 9 electrical connectors. LOOK in a Chiltons or haynes manual under Ignition Timing
