1986 Isuzu 4wd Trooper ll TURBO DIESEL WANTED #713168 04/05/06 10:36 PM

HELLO, I just purchased a 1986 Trooper ll with the 2.2turbo diesel. The good is: body is excellent, no rust, one owner,143k very clean, the BAD: engine: rod/bearing{s}. At 63k the rods went out, Isuzu provided the short block, he paid for the labor, then now at 143k pretty much same/same, at idle, engine sounds great, BUT, when you pick up the 'rpms' you then hear a slight rapping. SO, I'm looking for the impossible, a complete 2.2 turbo diesel engine, so I can switch out motors and then rebuild the original at my leisure. Now at e- bay, a guys from Florida has a 2.8 turbo diesel from japan, BUT HERES HIS STORY: he claims I can put his 2.8 in my trooper and it will bolt right up to my 5 speed tranny, without ANY modifications, no cross member issues no motor mount modsifications,SAYS NOTHING BUT: having the exhaust run on the right side since the 2.2 is on the left side, that's no problem at all. What I'm asking this forum is your excellent knowledge about where if any engines are AND ANY and all info regarding the switching of the 2.8 VS> the 2.2. Thank you in advance for helping, Norman/jiw395

Rebuilding a C223 is expensive. The importer who sold me the 2.8 diesel I installed can get a C223 with transmission for $1500. There's a good chance you can get just the engine by itself for less. Shipping was $200 for my engine/trans combo, I assume the same for this one. Quite a bit less than a rebuild. If you can't find a running engine, I can put you in touch with this outfit.

Have you tried nationwide junkyard searches? There may be some engines around somewhere...

Also, if you were looking at the $2800 2.8 on eBay, don't bother - I got mine with transmission for $2000. Way too expensive - that's why it's been listed for months.

I don't think the 2.8 (4JB1-T) will fit the earlier chassis (1984-1986, or is it 1987?) without modification. It will bolt into the 1988-91 Trooper, but then you'd have to convert the rest of the vehicle to diesel. See the link in my signature (and the thread in this forum) for more information on this conversion. I think the seller is either misleading you or doesn't know what he is talking about. The engine may well bolt to the transmission, but I would bet there would be crossmember issues and possibly motor mount issues as well.

If I were you, I would explore importing a low-mileage C223 from Japan and installing it. Keep the old engine for spare parts. If you have to get it with the transmission, there has been a reasonable demand for these units as they are rare, so you could always sell it.

ACY,
Thanks for the info, and yes I've read about your conversion
and checked out your blog, all of witch is great reading.Yes if in fact you can hook me up with the outfit that you got your engine/trans. I would be very grateful. Having an extra transmission would be good as well, you can never tell when it might be needed. Yes I have done several searches, including nation wide yards, really no luck, one outfit out New JERSEY, BUT THEY wanted the $1000.00 for the engine, which included shipping to my shop, sounded great, right?? WELL, get this, I started asking questions about the motor, like mileage turbo included, and THEN, she says, well you pay us first, THEN WE LOOK for your request. I asked, 'do you know where the motor's at'? OH NO, after you pay us THEN we'll look, well to make a long story short, I ended the conversation like a gentleman,,,
SO yes please, if you can get me some contact info, that would be the best news I've heard yet.
However, I did find a 2.2 turbo in Texas, BUT, it has a 170k miles, out of a wreck [ roll-over] but they said it ran when they got it 2 years ago, and to many electrical parts were taken from the truck to try to start it. Plus they won't deal with a shipping company, so I hate to drive 1200 miles to pick up not really knowing what to except when I got home, THIS has been my only hope BUT your connection has got me going again, so please, when you get a chance let me know... e-mail if you prefer: jiw395@sbcglobal.net, thanks, Norman/jiw395

Let me tell you all about C223T engine rebuilding.......I did it. I was ultra luck to find a NOS crank shaft for only $600.00,,,,You will need pistons,,over size pistons..I had a set pistons, rings, liners shipped in from Japan....The shipping killed me...I needed the cam shaft reground,,overhaul gasket kit......water pump...Injection pump and injectors must be re-timed and pressure tested.
Go and try to find engine bearing...I bought the very last set in the states from power seal...
Bottom line......My machine shop charged me around $2500.00 just for the machine work,,,,the parts cost around $2300.00,,don't forget about the clutch kit, motor mounts, starter and alternator.....Better change them NOW!!!
If you can swing the motor your self,,you will save about $700.00 to $900>00 bill.
If you don't drop the tranny....You still can pull the motor. But you will need to drop the front END
I will NEVER do that again......But never say never

I just rebuilt mine and didn't seem to be a problem with finding bearings,But it does seem to add up in dollars thats for sure, can't say I'd do it again either.

What about the pistons?? Did you just hone out the cylinder walls?? I couldn't find over size pistons to save my life. Thats why I looked over seas...When my truck started with a lower end rod knock. It made the pistons slap a bit side to side, thats whi I needed over side pistons. Also wiped out the crank shaft AND the small bearing pieces traveled throught out the motor made me put in new vale tappets and needing a cam shaft being reground....I was too far into the motor to just walk away...putting almost $4000.00 into a vehical machine shop work, parts and labor. But man did it run well.....I had 222-75 15's on it....In the summer time I would get just over 450 miles on a tank.....Well many be in the future

I just contacted " Charlie Jr.", the same guy 'acy76' got his 2.8turbo, Well charlie is going to check on getting me a complete 2.2 c322t, comes with a transmission, which I guess a spare is fine. Cost is $1500[with tran], take 30 days to get,{plus shipping} Which after reading all the forums regarding rebuilding the engine, $1500 sounds pretty fair......I'll keep this posted, thanks, norman/jiw395

Mine was $200 to ship from Florida to the nearest truck terminal in Minneapolis. I think it's a flat rate.
