Definitely didn't put it in wrong if the rest of it went back together... those things have a rather abrupt taper to them. I'll put in another vote for the preload not being set properly. IIRC, its 2.5-4lbs for an old bearing and new seal; 4.4-5.5 for new bearings and new seal. In case you're not sure how to set the preload:
