Sounds like you're talking about the MAF sensor. But I'm not sure. But I would say that if it's got an arrow on it, it should be pointing towards the engine.

88 Trooper would have to be the 2.6 since it wasn't until 89 that they put the 2.8 in. And I don't believe they had the 2.3 that year, just the 2.6 but I could be wrong.

If it's right next to the air filter, and it says HITACHI on it, then the arrow points AWAY from the engine, TOWARD the air filter. It is the Mass Air Flow sensor. I doubt the engine would be running if it were installed backward.

RICHARD IS CORRECT ONLY THE 2.6 AFTER SEPT 87 PRODUCTION, AND JEFF IS CORRECT ALSO ABOUT THE MAF SENSOR , I DIDN,T THINK YOU COULD INSTALL THAT THING BACKWARD THE WAY IT BOLTS UP,I WAS THNKING AGAIN , ISN,T THE HOSE CONNECTION LARGER ON ONE SIDE THAN THE OTHER . JERRY

If you are talking about the O2 sensor light on the dash, it comes on every 90,000 miles to remind you to change the sensor. There is a switch on the back of the instrument cluster that needs to be moved to the opposite position of where it is now.

Just to elaborate on Jim's explanation a bit...

Get a flashlight or a drop light, and on your back, stick yer head under the dash on the driver side. Look at the back of the speedo pod, you should be able to see a small square black "slide" switch. As Jim said, move it to the opposite position. That's all there is to it for another 90K miles.
