carter fuel pump issues #713640 04/06/06 07:37 PM

I have a carter electric fuel pump that is wired to a switch. Randomly when I go to start my truck the fuel pump wont pump. I can hear it, though it seems quieter than normal, but it wont pump any gas. If I pull the fuel line off at the carb and turn the pump on it generally starts pumping gas out almost immediatly and then works perfectly. Today it didnt work so easy, I ended up haveing to give the gas line a quick suck with the pump running (no gas was coming out) and no more than a half second later it started working and worked perfectly. This pump is no more than 6 months old and I have only really been driving my truck at all for about 2 of those.
Please help me out, I like the carter pump alot when it works, but if this keeps happening I may need to go back to the old reliable toyota pump.

Sounds like you might not be sealing all the way somewhere, check the fuel lines for starters.

That was my original thought, but it is. Infact I replaced the fuel lines and filter before the pump. I cant feel any air leaks, and there are no fuel leaks. It was doing the exact the same before I put new lines on. And if there was an air leak wouldnt it consistently not work?

mmmm It could be something in the pumb itself....try calling carter and see what they say, I'm not sure what kind of pump it is, but we use diaphragm type pumps at work and sometimes when they wear out or when part of the diaphragm goes bad this can happen.

well, to late to call now, might give it a shot tommorow. worked perfect for the rest of the day. Has anybody else had a problem with these pumps? Are there any other pumps that people have had good luck combing with a weber? This is the last thing I need to fix to get my truck completly back together and its driving me nuts!

I've got an aftermarket pump along with the stock mechanical pump, I've found that it helps alot in those situations when the stock pump can't keep up, it's got a regulator on it.....I donno the maker though, I can look tomorrow if need be, right now it's windy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

i have a carter electric fuel pump also. mine will do the exact same thing when my fuel filter isnt sealed correctly. i have one of those clear ones, they suck. the only good thing about it is that i can see if the pump is pumping fuel. check all connections.

if there isnt a leak, your fuel filter is clogged.

I hear those Carter fuel pumps are the deal. High volume, low pressure, right?

Ive got a brand new toyota filter at the tank. Its the stock one and its definatly not clogged.

Ive narrowed it down that it is definatly the pump. It didnt work this morning before school so I left it on and gave it a few strategic "taps". After about 30-40 seconds I heard it get a little louder and start pumping. And it worked perfect. So we'll see if it just needs some warm up time.

yup, Mine is 4 or 5 psi and 60-70 gph. Its been an awsome pump other than this.

what gauge wire are you running to it. it might be starved for power. check to see if you have a good ground also. ive had mine fall off while driving b/c it wasnt on there snug enough. i thougth i ran out of gas, it sucked, but was solved in about 5 min.

my truck ran better w/ the clear filter b/c the factory one didnt flow good enough. it wouldnt run as good at high rpms.
