Trooper started for 3 seconds and died. Would not start again. Thinking it is fuel pump but have lost my shop manual and am not sure how to troubleshoot. Which hose is the fuel supply? Is it the one on the top of the intake plenum, or is it the one that's connected near the bottom center of the intake(connects thru what looks to be a fuel pressure regulator)? Not sure if it's much of a test, but I took both of these hoses off(one at a time) and cranked over the engine and got.....nothing. So I am assumning the pump is dead. Can anyone give me any other things to try so I know for sure it's the pump? IIRC it's a real pain to drop the tank.

I took this hose loose........

...and then this one(ignore the hand).......

...and got NO FUEL out of either of them.

If you remember me talking about it several months ago, I had to "McGyver" a relay activated by the ignition to feed 12 volts to the pump. It's not the safest setup in the world, but it was the only way I could get it running at the time. I checked the fuse to my "McGyver relay" and it was ok, so I'm fairly sure I am getting voltage to the pump.

Dave-

You should get fuel out of either one of them. The feed is the one that enters the back side of the fuel rail. But it does not matter, as you will either get in fuel, or return fuel, but you should get gas one way or another.

Do the other usual. Pull the connector at the tank and apply 12 volts, or check for 12v at that point. Check the ground wire from there to the frame, or where it goes into the light harness.

But...it sounds like it is fuel pump time.

Good Luck,
Michael

Thanks Michael....That's what I'm thinking too but I just want to be sure before I have to drop the tank. Yuk. I sure wish they would have put an access panel in the rear floor.
I still need to double check my relay contraption and check for juice all the way back to the tank, but it's not looking good for the old fuel pump.

Before you go through the trouble of dropping the tank, check that the connecting plugs at the tank are good. Mine rotted (probably from salt intrusion) so I cut the leads off and soldered the wires together, slathered them with marine Goop and wrapped them with electrical tape for good measure. Still good five years later.

Definitely check the connector -- apply test voltage to the tank side to run the motor and scope out the harness side to make sure you are getting juice there. I don;t understand why that connector is such a failure point, as it seems to be a pretty weather-proof connector, with a compressible bellows to help seal, but it is a common failure!

Thank God I didn't have to drop the tank!
Started checking some stuff this morning and could not even hear the fuel pump running. As soon as I checked the (aftermarket)relay that I had installed several years ago I knew that the pump was not getting any power. Spent 6 bucks for a new relay and had it running in 5 minutes. I guess my advanced McGuyverism failed after about 5 years. Thanks for the help.

Nice Work. When I first got my trooper I had no fuel either. I got under the tank and found that the power wires had become disconnected. It's a typical 2-wire latch style plug, and the latch broke. I grabbed a zip-tie, and it's been working great :-D.
