It's mounted to the shifter assembly on gen I automatics. Prevents the car from starting when in gear.

off-roader, Are you saying that the Gen. 2 does not have the switch at all? Is the safety for no in-gear starting controlled soley by the ignition switch? I'm confused...any help is appreciated.

No. I'm saying where it's mounted on a Gen I. It might be the same on a gen II or it might not be. You'll have to check it to find out.
When I have access to my rig this evening, I'll post a pic.
Also, I don't recall for sure but I think someone else may have already posted a pic up on a past thread. Try doing a search for "Neutral Safety Switch" making sure you select the tech forum and also select a timeframe during the last 3 years.

Don't bother with the picture. I already looked through the center console area and the switch is definitely not there. Maybe down by the tranny somewhere???

Whups, it looks like they may have changed the location for the Gen II's. Other owners correct me if I'm wrong but based on what I'm finding in the FSM the switch is located in the passenger side of the engine compartment. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/off-roader/2006-04-19/1145487664_gen2neutralsafetyswitch00.jpg) Here's the pin readout and what pins are grounded when at each position... ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/off-roader/2006-04-19/1145487825_gen2neutralsafetyswitch01.jpg)

Looks more like the side of the tranny to me, but I've never looked at one in person.

Clay I would have considered that but the FSM that I was looking at (from that russian site) shows it located at [A] in that engine bay illustration which looks like the passenger side of the throttle body area. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I noticed that as well, but I figured it was just pointing down the right side of the engine. The next pic looks a whole lot like a transmission to me, and it makes more sense to put the switch on the tranny where the selector rod comes out (like nearly every other manufacturer) than anywhere else.

Thanks for the info. I think I may have seen that switch on the side of the transmission when I was looking around, but I didn't know what it was. I'll investigate more on the weekend and let you know what I find.
