Getting the Wheeling Fever
The SunTop is a convertible top for the 1st Gen 4Runners that has been out of production for several years.
- It requires no drilling and bolts on in a matter of minutes using the factory bolts.
- It uses the factory glass rear window.
- The top can be taken down or put up in less than 5 minutes.
- The bows fold down to the rear and can be covered with the included boot.
- The included bikini top can then be put up in a couple of minutes if you still want shade.
- The top is made using Haartz StayFast, a premium convertible top canvas fabric that is used on many luxury-class vehicles, so it is as quiet as (or more quiet than) the hardtop.

This top could be put back in to limited production if there is enough demand for it.

Thanks to Gohawks for the pics!

Here's the top fully up

The full top down and the bikini installed. It uses the roll bar for support and is tied to the tiedowns in the rear luggage area.

For more detail on putting it up and down, see surfpirate's page (he sold it to gohawks).

Would you buy this brand new? What would you be willing to pay for the whole package including the boot and the bikini?

How much would you pay for this premium top?

Wouldn't there be some concern with nothing supporting the factory glass on the top edge? With the glass extended and no frame for it to anchor to it seems like you could have a lot of broken glass.

Looks interesting to me, definitely doesn't have the look of the Kayline or Canback.

From what I have read before, the glass is captured in a channel in the top and is supposed to be fairly secure.

If there was a window at the big blindspot at the back...749 (that's what i will vote for)
Otherwise i wouldnt buy it.... makes it looks like a hearse without the window...

Dude I would love to have one of those, it beats the STC hands down. Hard to tell if it'd be as durable as the can-back over the long-term... but its definitely cooler.

Hupptoy is correct. It is captured very securely by a double thick fabric sleeve that is very close to the frame. That keeps it very secure.

I'm glad it doesn't look like the Kayline. I think that one is, how shall I put it, not my taste.

The CanBack is not a true convertible top. You're stuck with the frame in the way unless you take the whole thing off. It is really a fabric pickup topper.

Greg,

Blind spot: When was the last time you actually saw something through those back windows from the driver's seat? Me thinks that those windows are cosmetic or for your dog to look out (mine have many nose prints on them :)) As you can see from my sig, I've been driving mine for 20 years, and I don't think I've ever looked out those while driving. It's easier to see the same things with my mirrors.

Fabric durability: The CanBack is made from SunBrella, this has been made from Haartz Stayfast. The Stayfast is a thicker, more durable, convertible-specific fabric. Just ask Gohawks how durable and quiet it is. It's his rig that's pictured.

I disagree.. i do looks through those windows... i have a kayline top for the summer, but it needs alot of work to get it back into form....Thing is.. the kayline is terrible to look through (prob cause my windows are old).. will these fade like that as well?
I'm just saying that i, or other people (there was a discussion about this top on pirate4x4) wont buy this top if it doesnt have the rear windows because of the 4x4 hearse look... other than that the top looks beautiful

No, it's not, but it's really two tops, plus a boot to cover the framework when folded. If you were to buy the raw fabric for this top you'll be paying $100/linear yard of 60" wide fabric. If you buy it by the pallet, that's 9 rolls of 60 yards each, you'd still be paying $35/sq yd, That's an $18200 purchase. It is premium fabric! It is very durable and very quiet.
