>>>*I confess to being easily confused, and I have one here that has got me baffled. I have heard this same complaint before.
*Customer states that our exhaust manifold gasket has rivets that won't let it seal....? I get the same report, maybe one out of 400-500 or so?
I grabbed a head and checked, the rivets clear. I went and bought a competitor's gasket, made exactly the same way.
Can someone tell me what the combination is that causes this, or what the gentleman is doing? I said "wrong head", he insists it is correct and the one he took off did the same thing.....*EB
*Beats the he** outa me!....*LOL**...

I personally can't see where there would be a problem with the rivets not allowing the manifold to seal to the head. The rivets are outside of the clamping area. Combination that would cause this? More than likely lack of experience and not paying attention to the mating surfaces on both the manifold and the cylinder head. Here is a picture of how all mine look....courtesy of Myota. I've got to take some pics of my engines one of these days and store them in the computer. ~Darin

Perhaps the wrong manifold?
I had the untimely ability to (not) notice right away that the shop that rebuilt my 1985 22R engine installed the wrong cylinder head (they put the early 22R head on it with the round ports). I didn't notice this until the very last step for me, which was to bolt up the exhaust manifold. And I didn't even notice THAT right away. I put the two front exhaust studs in, then I put the rear two in. But when I went to put the middle bolt(s) in, in between cylinder 2 and 3, the manifold hole(s) did not line up with the head. I can't remember which way it was, but my exhaust manifold either had only one hole in that metal "strip" running between cylinder 2 and 3 and the head had 2 holes, or it was the other way around and the manifold had 2 holes and the head only had one.
So I know at a minimum that the 22R and/or 22RE can have slightly different exhaust manifolds and mounting hole patterns over the years.

And that exhaust gasket came from you Ted! Thanks. It must be a 'wrong' manifold as the gasket has holes in it for the exhaust manifold studs to pass through, allowing for only one position of the gasket.

Actually as I was bolting my downey header onto my new EB RV head I npticed that I have rivets that seem to not allow a complete seal. And I thought to myself "why the heck would they design this gasket with those rivets right in the way". I just did it anyway because that is how it was before and int cause any real problems. I do wish though that it was a little tighter. Is it the downey header or the gasket. BTW what the heck is RV for in EBs RV head!!! is it Recreational Vehicle or Re-Vamped or maybe its RV because with all the new power you free up you can tow an RV...

I ran into the same problem when I installed one of your gaskets into my '85 truck. Drilled the two rivets out and problem solved.

![[Linked Image]](http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/89Mudslinger/Mods/header.jpg) Picture of your gasket (slightly modified) from a after market header point of view. The rivets were on the part that I cut off. No interference at all.
