Getting the Wheeling Fever
Another thing to consider.... Turbo Diesel. For the amount of time/money to build a turbo setup for 22RE/T, you may come out swapping in a 1KZTE. These have about 140hp/250ft/lbs tq from the factory. Then just a few minor tuning upgraded to ECM and 175/300 is easily done while keeping Toyota reliability. Plus 30mpg hwy and 25mpg in town. Total swap usually costs around 4K in parts. They run in the same RPM range as the 22R so it's pretty straigt forward. Hardest part is replacing the wiring harness.

In the latest FOUR WHEELER they mentioned a turbo kit for 22RE's from LC enginering in the "whats new" section. From what I read and know it sounded like a good deal. Worth checking in to (IMO). <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The LC "kit" does not solve the EFI problem. For that, LC would have you buy one of their SDS standalone EFI setups + bigger injectors, which is another ~$1500. Nothing wrong with that, but if they are implying that they have a complete solution for the ~$2500 cost of their turbo kit, they are being misleading.

If one were to go this route, expect to spend at least $4k on the LC turbo kit and SDS EFI system, injectors, and other bits and pieces not included. Also, read the review I wrote about their turbo header. I've owned this piece for 6 years and have had to completely rebuild it three times, and am reluctant to recommend it.

i'm wondering why turbo manifolds are so expensive? it doesn't look like it's any more difficult to manufacture than a regular header. $700 is just plain nuts imho!

I think it's a volume thing.
every 22re turbo out there is as close to a one-off as you're about to find. you can find a honda or toyota(car) turbo header for ~$250 without even really trying, and they have about the same level of fabrication to them.

other options are the factory turbo manifold, which you can still get new from toyota for about $150, or you can get a turbonetics cast iron header for about $400. I've seen a few guys fabbing "log" style manifolds, and you see them on ebay time to time. they usually run about $250. I don't know how I feel about the log manifolds, though. seems like bad airflow mojo to me. I DO like the maifolds that put the turbo in the "over" position rather than the factory "under" position. the factory position causes problems with alternatior and power steering clearance, and just causes a lot of cursing and screaming, in general.

assuming you can weld, you can build your own header, and here's a lovely little write-up on how:
http://toyotaperformance.com/turbo_header.htm

even this isn't that cheap. it's about $200 in materials, alone. if you know where to find the weld elbows for less than $9/each, please let me know.

Again, I agree with Sundowner, but just want to add that due to the intense heat the turbo generates, these manifolds need to be made from stainless steel, and should really be TIG welded, and both of these add to the expense. The other thing that makes the LC manifold so pricey is the added work of welding up a downpipe and external wastegate dump pipe. When you buy the LC manifold, you get three pieces, and they all need to fit around the turbo properly. This, coupled with low volume, makes for a pricey piece.

Someday, if I get inspired, I'll post a list of all the places that offer turbo manifolds for this engine. In addition to the places that Sundowner listed, I know a few more that offer some innovative turbo manifolds for this motor. None are less than $400-$500, but there is probably more variety out there than folks realize.

Also, one more option that should be considered for the truly budget minded is using the stock 22RE manifold with a simple J pipe -- the low side of the J connects to the bottom of the 22RE manifold, while the turbo site on top of the tall side. Gery Meissner, who had a 250 rwhp turbo Celica, ran this setup with great results. This approach requires very good bracing (including an allowance for heat expansion), but otherwise works well, and puts the turbo on top where it's easier to access.

I agree with chuckles. No swap/modification of this magnitude will be cheap, so you might as well have a more usable setup when you're done (i.e., alternative fuels). Of course, mine's not started yet, so maybe I'll sing a different tune in a few months.

just as an FYI:
OBX racing is considering releasing a turbo header maybe as soon as this June for the 22re. For everyone who's thinking of cramming air down ythier 22re, it would be a big push to drop them an email and express interest in the product:
