Can someone show me how I can remove the upside oil filter on my 2006 Tacoma? Looks like a potential messy oil spill.. I see a drain flange with a hole that runs to a nipple on the left side underneath... I'm assuming if I attact a hose to that nipple that should drain the oil in the direction I want.. Am I correct? seen a few other stories of punching a hole in the top to allow siphon back into the pan or a plastic gallon bag underneath oil filter housing . Is that the only way to avoid oil running everywhere when I crack the seal? any info would be appreciated. thks

Yes, I believe that you are supposed to use a hose to route the oil to where you want. You can remove the filter and let it drain right there. The other methods you mentioned are more for horizontal filters on the older trucks.

You can slip an piece of hose on the nipple and run the hose to a drain pan if you like.
It's not messy at all, in fact it's very convenient. I put a rag under the little drain hole, spin off the oil filter and flip it up with virtually no spillage at all.

This thread is a mess. While interesting, the Avalon stuff immediately above has no applicability whatsoever to the new gen taco. And it follows a question about transmission fluid?
Back to the topic of this thread: I found that a large ziplock bag (a small one will tend to move around too much as it fills with oil), placed immediately under the filter drain nipple works great. The hose seems like too much work to me and it will seep oil in between oil changes. The bag method, while not so enviro friendly, is easy and clean. I am a big fan of the oil filter location on the new gens.

John's right. The '06 V-6 Tacoma uses a 1GR-FE motor; the '06 Avalon uses a 2GR-FE.
Digging around, I found that the '06 Tacoma uses a traditional spin-on filter. The '06 Avalon uses a paper insert filter - more of an old design.
I deleted my post. Hope I didn't send too many people down the wrong path.

get yourself a filter relocation kit and use steel braided lines. Whatever you do don't use the hoses that come with the kit. Put the filter where it is easily accessable and out of harms way. I did that to mine and been thankful ever since. plus you get to use PH8A filters. Sure makes life easy.
