Joe... I don't know much about the 2nd gens, but have you considered looking at whether a 1-piece inner shaft from an earlier application will swap in and totally replace the disconnect all together?

I've done this on many jeeps to defeat their vacuum disconnect. I would image this would afford some extra strength from just affixing the shift collar in the locked position.

just a thought.

I had thought about this and even had a 97 front axle to put in, but I didn't want to loose the ability to have one spare axle to fit both sides. Having the axle disconnect also makes it somewhat easier to remove the front axle. I think this is the best way for me. Good and strong and it didn't take long to do. It took longer to cut the plate to fit then it did to cut the fork and weld it in correctly.

Randii, I like your idea for it's simplicity, but I really wanted the vaccum stuff gone. Mine had already taken a few hits on the trails. There is much less there to hit now.
