Body Damage is Cool
I remember Phil's little louvered vent in his last Montero.
Mississippi Blue tends to idle alot while watching others in the club. Soon as she gets some speed going it isn't a problem. I guess it is possible that the waterpump is bad, I installed it when i built the motor 4 and a half years ago. I doesn't seem to have any problems when it is moving, just when sitting for a while. Soon as we popped the hood and let it sit till the heat subsided, then cranked it without issue. I never seen an engine w/ an electric pump vapor lock, but it sure did. I am very suspect of that fan blade but I did not get a very good look at it on the trail, HOT HOT HOT!!

Oh yea, I'm still around, I am in the process of installing an 8.8 in my YJ.

Just do like that one guy did, bolt two Holly Double pumpers on his hood ( the truck was fuel injected )
Use a manual cable and only open the butteryfly's when you need to vent

Sorry I've been a little outatheloop for a bit, happens every year this time, runs till June. Then HOLIDAYS. Anyways, I used a single hood vent from a chryco lebaron (80s-ish). I got it from mitsulvr who now owns my truck (ironic?). I only put one on one side, (battery side) because I found that the engine compartment was very hot in that area, when wheeling in mid-summer heat, esp when spending a fair bit of time idling/crawling. Seemed to work well at keeping the temps down a bit under there. There were some threads from a few years back where some folks had some trouble cooking their Optima batteries, and during the height of this, "Frank the dude" put a thermometer in various locations to see where the heat was concentrated. I seem to remember that much of it came from the exhaust mani's on the passengers side of the engine? I'm sure the dude can elaborate...

BTW, those exhaust mani heat shields don't usually last the life of the engine, so there's another place to look for heat...

[Dude checks in]

The heat was highest near the battery tray - which on the 3.0L is over the catalytic converter and Y-pipe on the passenger side - makes sense.... next hottest spot was on the driver side just past the radiator and over the inner fender - also makes sense considering fan rotation pulling air off the radiator and bouncing it off the hood.

All of this was on a 3.0L and not applicable to a 2.6L - likely a different heat pattern - BUT - the problem went away with a new fan clutch and radiator cleaning. .... and got even better when the engine was rebuilt and the water pump replaced. The fan clutch is a very, very important piece of equipment on a MMC product.

The Radiator has never been rodded, it is the original. The exaust manifold heat shield has been missing since I bought it. It could explain why it seems to happen when idling. Fan blade is original and fan clutch is original but was working well last I checked it and showed no signs of seepage of oil. Of course, the clutch is now weak, either it just is it's time or some of the water crossings may have damaged it. Wecome to the world of offroading a 20 year old 4wd. The fan blade will come off to be reinstalled on the new clutch when you get it. when it is off of the old clutch, look it over real well for cracks or damage.

I bought another 20 year old and have been replacing and upgrading just as fast as ever (probably faster because it is a Jeep)

Oh hell, I'm about to show my stupidity. What exactly is the exhaust shield. That little tuby thing or the shiny thing it is going to?

Forgive me - I'm not worthy

I just love those GenI's and am willing to learn...

Wyleone - hope not to embarass you - he's a good truck and love you for selling him to me - I just want to keep him going.

Y'all please don't make fun of me. If the powers that be would sell me a new Pajero, I'd drive it for another 15 years.

Yes the bottom part that the tube connects to. The tube btw is the heat riser for when the engine is cold.

What about fabricating louvers on the sides like the old t-birds that could be opened and closed with a lever in the cabin? Easy, right?
