On my '85 when I ran 5.29s and 33" tires, I got much better mileage than I do now with 4.88s and 33s. Probably 3-4 MPG difference. I did add some lift and did some engine power improvements before installing the 4.88s. At least with the 22RE, I think it runs more efficiently at higher RPMs. However, I find the driveability with the 4.88s is better. Much more pleasant driving at ~3000 RPM for hours on end than at 3500 or so. would this be any different on my 22r? im contemplating a gear swap and had a line on 488s but if it would really work better id look into 529s.
