Has anyone changed valve seals with head still on the motor? I'm trying to lower the oil consumption of my daily 4runner(22RE) without tearing into it to much. It runs great but burns through oil like a two-stroke Its got over 170lbs on all cylinders. Thanks

i *think* it can be done, but it's rather tedious. i was able to get the spring and retainer off of a valve with a broken guide on my old 22R. just make sure the valves don't drop into the cylinders!

I've done it before on a SB Ford not a 22RE so it may or may not work. Remove the sparkplugs, turn the motor by hand or breaker bar until the piston is half way up under the offending valves. Insert about a foot or more of vacume line into the bore through the spark plug hole. Then finish the up-stroke witch squshishes the vac hose between the piston and valves in turn holding the valves securely in place. Just turn it till it gets tight. Hope this helps.

If you have or can borrow a compression tester, you can connect an air compressor hose to the part that screws into the sparkplug hole and use compressed air to hold the valve up.

the biggest problem with attempting to remove the valve springs from these engines with the head on is that the rocker arms get in the way, and you can't remove them without undoing the head bolts and possibly compromising the head gasket. i was able to get the #4 intake spring and retainer off, but i'm not sure if it's possible on all the other valves. i could slide the rocker arm just enough to clear the compressed spring to remove it.t

Thanks guys, I like the idea with the vacumn line but i do have compression tester i can pop apart and use to hold them in place. I hadn't looked at it that close yet but i was hoping that the rocker arms would slide out of the way enough. If you could get #4 intake off then i should be able to get most of them because it seems like that would be the hardest one. Well i'm gonna give it a shot some time this week. Thanks Later
