Running 91 octane will increase your Mileage. In my Tundra I see about a 1-2mpg increase with premium over regular unleaded. I saw about a 2-3mpg increase in my 01 Tacoma that I put a 200K on also.

How about 91 octane, will that increase milage or performance??

If you engine does not *need* 91 octane (which it doesn't), then no increase in mileage or performance. It will just empty your wallet faster...

Customer cam in with an 05 Tacoma today, just an oil change...but while I was filling out the service reminder in the service book that he supplied, I also took a glance in the owners manual.

Sure enough, it says *Recomended fuel, 91 octane*
His is an 05 4.0 6 speed TRD Package

I noticed a solid 2 MPG increase in My ol' 92 Runner 3.0, 5 Speed whilst running 91 octane.

Also, seemed to have a *bit* more power, probably helped with the advanced timing.

With higher octane levels, it's a smoother, slower burn. Not so much as a *POP* with lower octane.

Havn't tried 91 with My Honda yet, $3.89 a gallon just isn't very appeling...but, my 33 MPG freeway sure is! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Maybe I'll try 91 on a tank, just for kicks...

I run plain old 87 octane. Nothing different since it was new.

I've owned several Toyotas now, most since they were new, off the lot and typically I didn't see real increases in performance or efficiency until around 25K.

Again, I'm not complaining about the fuel economy, just trying to figure out why.

Something I posted elsewhere:

Still, there has to be something in the management systems that causes this sudden wake up in mileage. Beyond the normal "it gets better mileage after break in" rhetoric as it has been my experience with a handful of new cars that 10% or more is not usual once the engine has seen a few miles. Additionally, I've noticed on all of the Toyotas I've owned that "break in" is usually somewhere around 25K... Short of AI there must be something in the software that optimizes the system. I think I'll make a couple of phone calls.

I have a couple of calls in at Toyota. Dunno if they'll call me back or not but it can't hurt to try the source.
