Hello Everyone,

I have a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo LS. I have been using 89 Octane Gasoline ever since I bought it. Gas prices in San Jose, CA are $3.39/gal for 89 right now and I only get about 200 miles per tank! Would it be okay for me to switch to 87? Will that cause any knocking or pinging from the engine and will mileage be the same as the 89 octane? Any input would help. Thanks.

Man I am running the cheap stuff and will continue. That is in a 02 model. I think you should be fine. I was happy today to pay 2.73 for a gallon. THat was 20 cents cheaper than 20 miles away at my house. I am going to be investing in a daily driver as well. That just means there will be even more mods to the truck.

Is a higher octane required for your truck? If not, use the cheap stuff. I always have.

But now, driving diesel, at 2.34gal, is fantabulous!

Gosh, you guys in the US that don't get these small diesels, I'm really feeling for ya. I'm gonna miss them when I leave here. Of course, maybe I can import, hmmmm....???

A decently tuned Zu that's got a knock sensor in it should be perfectly happy with 87.

at 10 cents a gallon difference between grades, the savings is a big gulp on a fill up. My rodeo runs fine on the 87, but does like the 89 better when mountain driving. it's the 50 cent rise in a month that's the killer, and it's only going to get worse

My engine doesn't like 87 octane, especially in the summer. Since another 10 cents a gallon is no longer a 7% premium, but rather a 3% premium over regular, I think I'll stick with the 89.

Wow, I'm surprised by the responses.... if you read your manual, you'll have your answer... gas prices are insane everywhere, just try not to floor it everywhere you go.... drive aloha

Seriously though, get whatever you can afford, if you feel a difference, don't do it again

I would experiment with different grades, and see what kind of mileage you get. I have always run midgrade (87 here) and it has worked fine. 85 gives me all sorts of knocking and pinging. The last time I filled up, I was in a hurry and pulled up to a pump that had only premium and regular. So, I just filled up with premium for an experiment. I keep track of mileage on every tank of fuel, so when I filled up the next time, I compared the premium gas mileage to the regular. I got an extra 20 miles or so on the premium, so it was worth the extra 2.00 it cost at the pump, at 18mpg. So, the switch may not be benificial if you get lower mpg.
