Bought a rebuild kit (boots and grease) from one of the el cheapo mass market auto parts store.. and CV's starting popping and binding from the crappy grease ... Parked it right away, tore it down and rebuilt using dealer supplied kit, and no further problems.. This was on a Subaru.

I could see some minor spalling where the junk grease just wasn't doing the job.. CV grease seems to be some really special stuff given the sliding contact and heavy loading inside a CV.
