Somehow, I made it the entire way home from work last night & no warning, my steering got tight pulling into my driveway, I look down & all the dash lights are on...I throw it into neutral & coast halfway up my drive (this is where it remains).

I put it in park & crank it...no sign of starting anywhere, just cranks & cranks.

When I turn the key on all the lower lights are on...seatbelt, e-brake, oil, etc & the airbag light is on as is the cel.

So last week I got the airbag light & figured I'd just forget about it & drive it as is...now this. It seems everytime I decide I'm going to start messing w/ the lift kit, it throws a fit

Any thoughts?...I disconnected the battery last night & this morning the same thing, nothing

If the engine cranks much faster than normal then yea, I agree, the timing belt snapped. Remove the screws from the upper timing belt cover and carefully pull it back and look at the cam gears. If you don't see a belt over the top of the cam gears it's busted.

If the timing belt is OK then check the fuel pump. A quick and dirty (but dangerous) check: remove a fuel line from the fuel filter. Turn ignition to ON or start. Fuel should spray out. Be careful...one spark and ka-boom!

Spark check: get an inductive clamp timing light. Remove rubber plug over #1 spark plug wire. Clamp on the timing light. Crank engine. If timing light flashes you have spark.

Start with that.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Sounds like what happened when the cam position sensor went on mine.

'95 Sportage 4x4 5speed SOHC bone stock, 200,000 miles and counting.
The KIA isn't as powerful as the dually, but it sure is easier to park.

When I was having problems last year...

the fuel pump was replaced, timing belt checked...looked newer, crank position sensor replaced, computer replaced, fuel filter replaced along w/ the standerd plugs & wires...

all that & it turned out to be the relays...

Sooo, I'm checking the spark tonight...hope it's not the timing belt, but if so, at least it would be the obvious problem.

No spark...

Could it be the coils? Is there anyway to test them?

My crank position sensor was changed last year, could it be the cam sensor or something else?

What else would cause no spark?

Thanks

Short list of items needed to get an ignition pulse:

Camshaft position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor.
A good ECM (ignition circuit is built in)
Coils.
Plug wires.

To help track down the problem you will need a DMM (Digital Multimeter) with a bargraph display. Set the DMM to DC volts.

Behind the MAF there is a covered connector called the DLC (Data Link Connector). Pry open the cover and put the DMM on Pin 3 (yellow/white wire). Crank the engine and watch the bargraph on the DMM. You should see it pulse while cranking the engine. If it pulses the ECM and cam/crank position sensors are OK and chances are you have a bad coil. If no pulse things are gonna get messy. Either the cam/crank sensor isn't working or (gasp ) the ECM took a dump.

If it's not pulsing you may want to try a scan with a scan tool and see if the ECM set a DTC for either the cam or crank sensor.

Just a thought...try swapping the relays again...just in case.

The crank sensor is new...the ECM, I changed last year, but put one in that had more miles than mine...I can put my old one back in if neccessary.

If one of the coils goes bad, won't it try to run on two cylinders? Is it unusual for one coil to go bad & it not start at all?

I'm going to try to find a multimeter...unless they can be had cheap.

edit: the first thing I tried was swapping the relays to no avail. Autozone has a digital multimeter w/ a numerical read for $19, would this work or do I need the more expensive one?

I don't think a $19 DMM would have adequate response and it certainly won't have a bargraph display. I checked out the DMM's that Radio Shack carries and they don't offer a bargraph either. I guess you would have to invest in something like a Fluke 87 DMM which retails for over $300. I have one but obviously you don't want to spend that much. But I think I have an alternative...

I was looking at the ignition schematic and one of the coil primaries goes directly to the tach. This could function as a check of the ignition. Crank the engine. If the tach pulses while cranking it would be a good indicator that the ECM is pulsing the coils. If the tach stays at zero while cranking I would suspect there's no ignition pulse.
