If one of the coils goes bad, won't it try to run on two cylinders? Is it unusual for one coil to go bad & it not start at all?

I'm going to try to find a multimeter...unless they can be had cheap.


edit: the first thing I tried was swapping the relays to no avail. Autozone has a digital multimeter w/ a numerical read for $19, would this work or do I need the more expensive one?



I don't think a $19 DMM would have adequate response and it certainly won't have a bargraph display. I checked out the DMM's that Radio Shack carries and they don't offer a bargraph either. I guess you would have to invest in something like a Fluke 87 DMM which retails for over $300. I have one but obviously you don't want to spend that much. But I think I have an alternative...

I was looking at the ignition schematic and one of the coil primaries goes directly to the tach. This could function as a check of the ignition. Crank the engine. If the tach pulses while cranking it would be a good indicator that the ECM is pulsing the coils. If the tach stays at zero while cranking I would suspect there's no ignition pulse.
