last summer i picked up a V6 4.88 3rd member with about 38k on it, and installed an EZ locker. i set the backlash to .006", and put zero preload on the bearings, per the FSM. however i've been reading that i should preload the bearings, and loosen up the backlash from spec?
anybody have any words of wisdom -- i haven't installed it just yet, but will be soon...

Kyle, zero pre-load on the carrier bearings will be a death sentence for your ring gear. You should set the BL to the same value before you took the carrier out. Now if you didn't measure it....or didn't mark the spanner rings (like I do) then set it for about 8 thou and crank the snot out of the bearings.....don't forget to beat the bearings with a hammer and crank some more.

so, if i understand right, i'm guessing i should get to zero preload again to make sure everything's equal, then crank the heck out of the side adjusters? i don't have a spanner wrench, just a hammer and punch.

my question is, by tightening the hell out of the spanners equally on both sides, wouldn't that cause an increase pressure/friction/wear to the needle bearing? On the other hand, I do totally agree of doing that results a more rigid/less flexy carrier within the 3rd case.

On the other hand, I do totally agree of doing that results a more rigid/less flexy carrier within the 3rd case. 100 ft/lb might sound like alot of pressure but I did get a feel for what 100 pounds on the spanners is like when the pinion has been left out and it takes less than 30 in/lbs to actually spin just the carrier by itself. So no worries. Kyle---how'd it go? How many notches?

hadn't touched it yet, i'm about to go out in the garage to do it now. i have to redrill the pinion flange for my early bolt pattern, i hate doing that so i've been putting it off all day. after that, i'm gonna enlarge the holes on all the driveshaft and axle/t-case flanges to accept 3/8" bolts, i set the front like that when i rebuilt the axle and it's working pretty well...

well, i think i'm successful. tightened each adjuster 5 or 6 notches from where they sat, so there shouldn't be any worries about the bearings being too loose. got the backlash set right at .008", ready to roll
