Just like to know what some of you guys are getting for fuel mileage with your DIESELS? Are they reliable? Whats the thing to watch out for? Are they expensive upkeep? What kind of motors did they come out with & HP & TORQE?

Body Damage is Cool
Here's my story:

4D56 Turbo Intercooler

Manual tranny and 5.29:1 gears

260,000km's on the clock

100hp and would like a little more torque

14L/100Km on 38x15.5x15 tyres

14L/100Km on 36x14.5x15 tyres

14L/100Km on 35x12.5x15 tyres

and 14L/100km on 32's on stock alloy's

And I get better H-way mileage on the big ones, nothing ever beats a diesel fuel consumption.

I see sooo... If a guy was thinking of maybe doing a motor swap from gas to diesel & got a donor truck would my trans bolt up to it?(km145)5spd.Or is this just to much change . I was thinking of swaping a 4G63 16v duel cam turbo gas out of a 1990 to 94 eagle talon or plymouth laser. It gets 28mpg on the hyw.with 190hp.Are thoughs diesels turbo ?My 2.6L was getting about 22mpg.What years was the diesel available & in what vehicles? .

As regards the diesel engines, the 2.5 litre turbo had a major upgrade in 1989 with roller rockers, an intercooler with a speed and temp. sensitive fan below it. The wastegate setting was changed to give more boost. The resulting engine had 94 HP and 173 lb. ft of torque at 2000 rpm.
It was upgraded again for the series 2 body with new liners and pistons and a bigger capacity turbo compressor and uprated intercooler. Power now 100HP and 177lb. ft of torque.
In New Zealand the Pajero Diesels have a poor reliability record, with many not going much past 200,oookm.
But the 2.5 and 2.8 diesels in the series 2 shape are better than the diesels in the series 1. In fact the 2.8 engines are as good as anything else.
New 2.5 diesel long engines are available here for N.Z.$3,200, an excellent price when reconditioners want that and more to recondition a tired engine. The new engines are sourced from Hyundai as the series 1 body shape Pajero continued on in production in Korea until 2004 with a new grill and headlight "facelift" It was fitted with the later series spec. 2.5 diesel and perhaps a petrol engine too.
Many thousands of Pajero's came to New Zealand as used Japanese imports, but servicing in Japan seems to be poor, and when used hard in New Zealand, many series 1 Pajero's soon gave trouble. Perhaps some had higher milages and were "clocked" back before export, something to look at carefully if buying a used Japanese import. However there are many still around, and a great many series 2 in petrol and diesel as they fill the needs of many people.
