This is caused by a poor oiling design inherent in the overhead valve train components. Most of us don't see this in normal use, but you will see exactly what you are describing as a result of improper oiling during high speed turns. I have more info here on my web site, as well as a mod you can make to the rockers to eliminate this problem:

It sucks, but it speaks to the forklift roots of this motor: it was never designed with extended high speed cornering in mind.

The exhaust side gets oil last so the suspicion is it is oiling related.

#2 & #3 rocker shaft towers can be reversed, this will block off oil flow, the oil feeds across to the opposite side through the center tower. Also check for an obstruction of some kind.

If the lobes didn't get oil quickly enough at startup, then they can start to cut. Once they do start, they will keep on wearing.

It's not likely to be a rocker arm problem because that would show as wear on all of them. Unless the cam is a crossflow design (more lift on the exhaust side) which means you could simply be overpowering the spring.....*EB

thanks for the input, I will try that rocker mod and check to make shure the rocker towers were assembled right. now the only question is what cam would be a good cam to replace it? not sure of the current specs, but i know it was a high lift and sounded extreamly healthy at idle. Early 20R head with a 22R block which have both been built to the max. It was made to use a 500cfm carb (i've got the holly 500, #4412 on it now) and it was ment to race.

unless you've got forced induction on that, that's a little much carb in my opinion. even a full race 22R can barely slurp over 325CFM.

Is the track dirt or asphalt? Slow corners or fast?

I thought the 4412# was the little 2 barrel, 350cfm??? (I might be slipping there, been awhile.) 2 barrels rate CFM differently than the 4 barrel designs.

It should be fairly easy to come close with a cam design for your use, I suspect you need to run between 3000 and peak?...*EB

The holley 500cfm is used on alot of the toyotas that race the dirt tracks as far as i know. the #4412 carb is a 500cfm usually modified for racing. A typical 4412 500cfm two barrel with no modifications flows as advertised approx. 500cfm at 40.6 inches of water depression. As for the rpms I have never taken it above 6000. I run this setup in my 4x4 truck and rarely have it on pavement. I use it for rock and hill climbing, and mud racing. high rpms is a must beteen 3000 and 6000peak. I need a cam that could handle those rpms and engine modifications. thanx

Although I spent many hours (over 4 years) analyzing camshaft profiles for increased torque between 2500 and 3500 RPM in the 22R, I remember that EB's 270, Crane, and Erson produced some good numbers for upper RPM profiles. If you aren't going to make a decision on a camshaft between now and Monday, I'll run some numbers this week-end and post them for you. It may be helpful to your search. Can you give me your engine mods and specs? I assume you are looking for peak throttle response at around 5,500 and most torque need between 3K and 4K??
