Edy, The point isn't that corn is the only thing that will take CO2 out of the atmosphere - the point is that we are using a fuel that reduces CO2 and creates oxygen in its production.
Fossil fuels on the other hand simply create CO2. Thousands of years of CO2 being burnt up in a couple hundred years equals no more Swiss Alps.
Sugar Beets are a great idea. Especially for climates furthers North. May have more potential than corn in some respects - more sugar equals more alcohol does it not? Brazil has been doing this for years with sugar cane.

I hope they get the E85 thing down soon, 'cause after Israel drops a nuke on Iran, the stuff's gonna hit the fan, and there won't be any oil coming out of the middle east. It won't be a nuke just a tactical strike. The outcome will be the same though. One thing I see as being good for us in ethenol production is that it will bring more demand for farmed goods. Currently farming is a highly highly subsidised(sp?) industry.

Great topic and posts! I did some looking on ethanol too and found out lots. Check out these two paragraphs about the trade offs in emissions for ethanol vs. gas vs. blended. The combination of ethanol and gasoline results in overall increases in smog-producing volatile organic compounds compared with either pure ethanol or pure gasoline. However, this can be overcome by blending ethanol with a gasoline that has been manufactured to have low volatility.
A high-ethanol fuel such as E-85 also produces lower levels of nitrogen oxides and toxic hydrocarbons such as benzene (a carcinogen) than gasoline does. Although E-85 produces higher levels of formaldehyde and other toxic aldehydes, the resulting concentrations are small and are effectively removed by catalytic converters in recent-model cars. F

[quote So here is a wild prediction: 20% and more DROP in the price of gasoline by Fall...*EB [/quote]
*EB, that's no "wild prediction", gas prices always drop about 20% after the vacation-summer season!! Gnarls.

I noticed one thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread. The normal fuel lines are not suitable for running E85, they are not designed to last long with the high alcohol content. I can't remember where I read the exact quote, probably somwhere while doing research on my '04 Suburban (flexfuel compatable) Here is a good link for a lot of info on E85. It has a bunch of questions and answers. E85

Methane is burned off in ANWR; I don't think they're prospecting for ethanol.
Growing season is too short; ground's too cold. Them midwestern guys might be happy to have a job again.
Hmm..if you could make silage taste like lichens, the caribou might like AND get a little fatter!!! Drilling for Oil! I may be from the city...but I know you don't drill for corn. Lord knows I saw enough of that when I lived in Iowa!!!

Crossing the plains last summer I topped-up with three consecutive tanks of E85. If the fuel was available locally I'd still be using it. EFI brain did it's job as I did not experience any noticable detonation/pinging... 22RE RV. You shouldn't have any pinging at all, E85 is rated at 105 octane. Dramatic environmental changes, neocon geopolitical disaster in Middle East, peak oil and exponential increase in global demand are very real and convincing arguments. Huh?

Anyway, I checked my first full tank of my non-E85 certified fuel mixture. About 11 gals of regular and about 6 gals of E85. I got 19.4 in town with the a/c on about half the time. Mark
