12 bolt is ~= to a D60. IIRC bigger ring gear/pinion, about the same size shafts etc...
If its any consolation, Dallas is using a 12 bolt rear in his new buggy(Trooper), and I believe he is on 37s.

Its definetly stronger than a toy rear end in practically every major dimension and a bunch of the guys I wheel with are flogging 37-38s with Toy 8" axles and not having any problems. So the Isuzu axle should be even tougher.

I still have my dana 44s for sale. my front was from Rob, the rear is locked with an eaton e-locker. 5.13 R&P. Although its not probably the cheapest option... I will bet that you can get them in before moab...

You don't want a 1st gen 12 bolt. They're narrow (about 57" - 58") with 3" tubes. You want a 2nd gen, '95 - '97 or so Trooper axle (61" - 63") with 3.5" tubes and the spring perches at least may still be usable as-is. The early - mid 90 Troopers had either just the 61" or the 63" as an option (look for factory fender flares, these had the wider axle). I think by '96 and '97 they were all the 63" axle, but I don't know if that's a hard rule or not.
The '98+ is the larger modified 12 bolt with D60 sized ring gear and 1.5" shafts. This would be a killer axle, but you might have a hard time finding locker and 5.38's for it. This is the one you had to get these from Iceland several years ago. Matt may have something now, but I'm not sure they're available any more.

Random Questions:
--- Is the rear brake mechanism the same on a D-44 as on the 12-bolt(s)?
More specifically: --- Will D-44 calipers work on the 12-bolt? --- Will the rotors themselves interchange between the two?

Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.

No, the calipers are very different. IIRC, 12-bolts use a parking brake mechanism built into the caliper while the D44 uses a seperate drum brake system inside the hat of the rotor. I think its a safe assumption the rotors wouldn't swap either.

Foo!
Thanks Rob, That's not what I was hoping to hear, but it's good to know what I'll be up against if I decide to switch to a 12-bolt.

-Rob 1st gen only. The '94 Amigo and 2nd gen troopers all use the drum inside the rotor type e-brake. I don't know if they're the same as the D44 parts though. --Dan
