Fred they do not disengage when shifting gears.. I betcha what you are describing is the TURNING of the wheels.
When behind another vehicle and turning left to pass under power the locked wheels do not want to go left. As one will have to go faster than the other.. I betcha that is what you felt.
The only time the locked wheels unlock is when coasting and turning. At that time the locker allows the wheels to turn at different speeds.. BUT when power is applied both wheels MUST turn at the same speed.

the last of my lift got shipped monday. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> once installed it's on to tires. then locker for the rear only. i am wondering about your locker and what you like and don't like about it, issues, install, anything to help me make a decision on which one to order. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

What I like about it?
It's stock and it's selectable. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

What I don't like about it? That you can only engage it if you're in 4Low. (Haven't had the time to complete the bypass yet)

All kidding aside, having had a non-selectable and now having a selectable, i will never go back to a non-selectable.......definitely not in the frontend, down right dangerous.

BigJim, what he is describing is what I was talking about. Pardon me while I quote myself.

what happens is, as you shift gears the cross shaft in the diff goes slack, and as power is applied in the next gear one rear wheel is driven before the other. this causes a slight pull to one side or the other until both wheels are being driven.

That might be it, but I was under the impression that these lunchbox type lockers disengage when they have no power going to them (letting off the gas) and engaging once power is given, thus allowing the vehicle to go around a corner without chirping the inside tire when you let off the gas and then engageing once you get on the gas when your going strait. So when you depress the clutch to shift it disengages the power from the drivetrain to the locker and when you shift and let go of the clutch the power goes back to the locker engaging it once more. This does not happen with my ZJ because I has a auto but with the manual tranny on the Rodeo it happens, I think it is the sudden imput of power to the locker at a high rate of speed that's causeing the veering effects in my particular case. But then again I could be wrong and it just be some particular handleing characteristic on the Rodeo.

Pete if that were true then OPEN diffs would react as you describe!

I have run a powertrax no-slip in my tacoma with 33's for three years now and haven't broken any parts so far. I'd put one in my YJ, but I'm afraid it would be risky with my wife or daughter driving it on the highway.

It does what fred describes. The hole for the cross shaft is an oval for a lunch box, not a perfect circle like a spider gear. The driving force is what locks them, hard. There is only enough slack for one side to pop out at a time, so when the torque is minimal one side usually disengages unless there is no difference in tire run out.
