I have only done 2 things so it has to be one or the other of them. #1) replaced instrument panel with a junkyard one that has a tach, #2) took off the front bumper and lights in bumper. Now for the problem. The left turn signal ticks twice and then goes solid. The right turn signal will stay flashing unless I push on the brake, then it goes solid. What could be causing this? I didn't really think the instrument panel had that much to do with turn signals and they shouldn't be acting any different with just the front lights removed. What could it be?

I think that the cluster swap could possibly screw it up. the circuit must pass through the cluster for the signal indicator lights. are you sure that specific cluster is compatible with your year? I guess a test to see if it is the cluster would be to swap them and see if it fixes the problem.

Sounds like the path for the ground is buggered somehow. Reinstall the lights and see whatcha get.

Problem is:
#1) He's tearing too much into this rig before a ROAD TRIP #2) I think with Idaho plates in UT that he's gonna impress anyone. #3) I'd be amazed if anyone behind him would realize what the heck he was doing!!!!!

I didn't really think the instrument panel had that much to do with turn signals and they shouldn't be acting any different with just the front lights removed. What could it be? Are you saying you took the front turn signals off completely? If so, hook them back up to see if it fixes the problem. The flashers are built to have so much resistance, and unhooking the front bulbs could be the cause of your problem.

I second the missing front signal lights being the problem. I recently had a cranky left signal, it would blink really fast like it does when you plug in a trailer harness, but the right one was normal. It was an intermittent problem though so I couldn't place it, also I could see the signal working at night so I didn't think that was it. One day when it was blinking fast all the time I left it on, got out and looked and sure enough the front signal wasn't working. Took it apart and found it all gunked up and the bulb all corroded. Cleaned the socket, replaced the bulb and bingo no more problem. So, as mentioned, the turn signal unit needs a certain resistance to work properly, if a bulb goes out, or if you add bulbs like with a trailer harness plug in (which is wired in series) you change the resistance of the system and the blinkers go.... on the blink.
If you want to keep the bumper off, check out 4crawlers cheap trick page for a very nice way to wire your signals into your running lights up beside your headlights where Toyota should have put them in the First Place! You can use the sockets from your signal lights that you are not using right now.

Thanks for all the info. I will reinstall them and see what happens, think I already threw the broken one away though. I agree with kewlynx on all points. I shouldn't have dove this deep at this point. Leaving Monday for SLC. Can't do to much right now because of time and I mashed two fingers at work last night, one could be broken. Hopefully reinstalling the lights will fix it. I'll let ya'll know!

Well the problem is fixed. I just took the turn signal harnesses and plugged them into the the marker lights by the headlights and presto, they work just like that! Neither one has a lens, so I'm going to get amber bulbs tomorrow. At least this problem is solved. Now the timing chain cover is leaking horribly now that I fixed the oil pan. That can, and has to, wait until I'm in Utah.

Cool; have a safe trip and toss a couple extra quarts in the back if you're taking the scenic route.
