Electrical Issue Need Help #723089 05/13/06 02:18 AM

I just picked up an 89 Chevy 3/4 Ton 4x4 and I've got a weird issue.. My horn only works when my headlights are on. I've looked and looked and cant find anything.. Is there a constant power that runs through the headlight switch and to the horn?
I've got a haynes manual but I cant find the horn in any of the schematics..
Any / all help is greatly appreciated...

Ok the plot thickens..
I thought the problem might be the headlight switch so I pulled it out and apart then I jumpered between the red and orange wires and everything started working as it should.
So I thought it might be the switch. I went and got another switch and the horn still only works when the lights are on, but if I jumper the red to orange on the back of the plug everything works... Where does the orange wire come from? I'm assuming it's supposed to have power going to it but I cant find it in the Haynes manual..

Thanks again

Typically, orange is a +12v wire from the fuse block.

I'd start with a quick check of the fuses under the hood. If all works when you jump red to orange, and orange is otherwise dead, it sounds like you are powering the whole circuit from teh one red wire.

I don't have an 89 manual in fromt of me at the moment, and I won't be loggin on from work until after they get the popups issue cleared up, so for now, just check the fuses and let me know how it goes. I can have better answers for you Monday night (late) if you don't figure it out by then.

i agree. i also think you need to trace the wirring from horn to see where it is wired to. some one could of rewired it to the lights 12v source. which would explain why they only work with lights on.
you never know what youre getting into on a used vehicle.

I traced the wire from the plug that goes into the headlight switch and only made it about a foot and get lost in the bundle. If someone can tell me where it goes I would greatly appreciate it.
For the time being I just ran a 12v wire and tied into it where it joins the bundle. It works now as it should but still not a real solution.
There is no fuse box that I can see under my hood. I'm not a mechanice by any stretch of the imagination so it's possible I missed it but I dont believe so.

Looks like someone has been screwing around with your wiring. My best advice to you is to take it to a professional to have it diagnosed properly.

If you still want to try to tackle it yourself, I'd first look under the cover on the passenger side firewall for wires disconnected from the bus.

Here's a couple of wiring diagrams.

If you are in the Modesto Kalifornia area, I can take a look at it for you.

Hey I really appreciate the diagrams.. Those will help a great deal..
Im in the Dallas area (Go Mavericks!!<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> ) so stopping buy would be really difficult, but I greatly appreciate the offer.

My next issue if someone has any insight is by brake light on the dash stays on constantly. The the ! and the P symbols on. If I unplug the controller box under the hood the lights go out but that's not a really good solution. I've also tried unplugging the parking brake switch with no luck. Any ideas there???
