Typically, orange is a +12v wire from the fuse block.

I'd start with a quick check of the fuses under the hood. If all works when you jump red to orange, and orange is otherwise dead, it sounds like you are powering the whole circuit from teh one red wire.

I don't have an 89 manual in fromt of me at the moment, and I won't be loggin on from work until after they get the popups issue cleared up, so for now, just check the fuses and let me know how it goes. I can have better answers for you Monday night (late) if you don't figure it out by then.
