As an American stationed in JPN, who's bought 2 vehicles and motorcycle, if I were you, I'd go through a reputable importer. I'd easily pay someone to take care of all the red tape. Believe me, buying a vehicle IN PERSON is not easy. I can't imagine trying to import from overseas on my own.
