Getting the Wheeling Fever
So, the picture in the howto on 4x4wire just shows that crankshaft oil seal being pried out from the oil pump. I tried that, but mine just won't come out. I mean, it's really in there tight! Is there some trick to getting this thing out?? At this point, I've damaged the seal beyond repair, so it's gotta come out somehow. Suggestions?

Thanks,

=-=Matt

Did you take the oil pump off? If so, you can use a punch or screwdriver and pound the seal out and use the old seal to drive the new on in or a block of wood. If you have not pulled the oil pump, you could try to put a screwdriver into the seal and pry it out. I have had good luck with drilling a small hole and putting a screw into the seal and pull it out with vise-grips.

I have a seal puller for that kind of stuff.

Not that big a deal to pull the pump if you need to. Get some cardboard to punch the bolts into as you DO have 3 different lengths.

Behind that is the oring seal for the pump and the spline; no other messes really.

One of the bolts near the relief valve will need a small amount of RTV put back on it during reassembly.

Put back together and torque down per specs in the book.

Yeah, I should have stated that I already had the oil pump off the timing cover. After beating and prying and cussing my head off, I finally took the thing to a machine shop. The guy was like "oh yeah, those are real easy to pop out. Here, I'll do it for you." A few minutes later is was more like: "Umm... maybe you should buy a new oil pump." That seal was NOT going to come out. You can see below how badly it got mangled in the attempts

But yeah. Got the timing chain replacement all finished this evening. Truck runs like a top! And no leaks yet, so far as I can tell! Things would definitely not have gone as smoothly without all the help from everyone on here. Thanks! And thanks for the super kit EB. And same to 4crawler for the awesome write up.

Wow, that pump looks like it's been around awhile; what year rig did you pull that off?

Congrats on a good job!

It came off my 1990 pickup. All in all, I guess it was probably smart just to replace it anyway. Guess I won't have to worry about the oil pump for a while!

Thanks! I'm just happy I got it all put back together before I have to be driving off on a long road trip tomorrow!
