Body Damage is Cool
Hey all,

I'm researching importing a Pajero. My wife and I test drove a 1990 GenI LWB Exceed on Saturday, and one thing she commented on was the lack of headroom. We have tall family, (I'm far from tall) and whether they will fit is always a concern for her. This wasn't the high-roof model, obviously and it had vents in the headliner (for AC?)

Anyway, I need to know if the GenII have the same or more headroom inside. Do I need to hold out for the high-roof?

Any info is appreciated.

...wow.

The only guys I've seen complain about headroom in a Gen 1 (1990 and earlier) are all over 6' 4" tall.

I'm 5' 11", and nowhere near the roof. At least 3" above my head.

Maybe a sunroof option was causing the low ceiling?

Importing to where?

I have never seen the ac vents in the roof, so I can't comment on the height of the roof in the model you looked at buddy, but as per your PM, the interior of the genII is updated compared to the genI.

Here is a view from the back of my LWB genI, without the roof vents, just for reference. I've always found that headroom was one of its strong points...
(pic is too big for direct linky so click here)

I can show you the interior of a genII for comparo, if you like. I think you got my list of what changed between the genI and genII? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Nope, no sunroof, but there were lots of vents along the sides of the headliner. I'm sure it had some crazy heat/AC option. There was this radiator built into the right rear wall of the truck for rear heat. Also had passenger AC/fan controls on the back of the center console arm rest.

It looked nothing like the pic you posted Phil. (Got the PM, thanks a bunch!) Not an arched roof at all, and more of a modern flocked material than the vinyl you have there. I'm 5'7" and my head was nearly rubbing in the back seats and there wasn't much more up front. Wife is taller than me and it bothered her right away. It did have some kind of a suspension seat though. I didn't play with it to see if it had height adjustment.

You must have come across something strange the headroom is very plentiful in the GenI. Try looking at another of the same year of truck I doubt it will be the same.

That pic is a bit blurry, but I see a similar radiator in the rear. Can't really see the roof/headliner.

A/c vents in the ceiling don't really compromise headroom as the vents and their plumbing are routed through the outer edges of the ceiling. My brother's Monty has both the rear a/c and moonroof though I don't notice any decrease in headroom compared to my rear a/c but no moonroof Pajero LWB. Ours are GEN II's, though.

I am approx 6'7"-6'8" (its been a long time since I measured my height), and I fit just fine both in the Drivers side and passengers side of my 1988 Dodge Raider. Headroom and legroom aren't issues in Gen 1's, but I cannot speak of the Gen 2's.
