'96 Trooper failed safety inspection due to burned out bulbs. Simple, huh? Yeah, for you maybe. Unfortunately, I can't figure out where the switch is located so I can't test my new bulbs. In fact I don't even know the purpose of the light. It's the clear bezel just under the front turn signals and it doesn't come on with the headlights, parklights, or emergency flashers. Can somebody help me please, so I can get a sticker on this thing? Yep, I'm sober.

The light is there so that it illuminates whatever you are turning towards when you flick the turn signal on.
I'd say your wiring harness is shot, or something of the sort, if the new bulbs aren't working.

Like Zillon said, It's there to light the area into which you are turning. and it doesn't come on with the headlights, park lights, or emergency flashers. You have to have the headlights on and the turn signal on to get them to light. 96 Trooper failed safety inspection due to burned out bulbs. and I can't figure out where the switch is located so I can't test my new bulbs. Maybe the safety inspector couldn't figure out how they operated either so they must be in violation. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

and to qualify further... you cannot simply hold the turn signal on, as in lane changes, you must push the lever all the way until it engages and stays on for the side lamps to come on. (with the headlights on)

I do not hesitate to thank you guys. As usual, this forum and it's members saved me a garage bill. The inspector was good..(the bulbs were bad), and I never thought to turn on the blinkers and headlights at the same time. Thanks to all three of you first responders.
