would replacing a 89 4runner 22re w56 tranny with a 85 4x4 truck 22re w56 tranny have any problems? tcase or block / flywheel / clutch problem?

"turn"? are there any signs I should look for? this truck was abused untill I owned it at around 200000. is the fly wheel easy to take off and resurface?

there are 6 bolts that secure the flywheel to the crank. from the factory they are locktighted so unless you have a high powered air ratchet, the only way i could get them to break was to use a cheater bar (about a 4' one) on my half inch ratchet and either a fly wheel holder ok when i did it i had to take a ratchet strap across the top of were the bell housing blots up to the motor and strap the motor down to the frame. also if you do the stap you will have to stop the flywheel, i used a big flat head screw driverand wedged the teeth by puting the screw driver beteen the fram rail and fly wheel. you have to be careful when you do that to make sure you get the tip of the screw driver as deep in the tooth as u can as you can very easily chip or break the tooth on the fly wheel.


than once its off a machine shop or maybe even carquest or something, can turn it/ resurface. be sure to cheak the clutch out as well while you are there, or better yet if the truck has that many miles just replace the clutch any way.

what Is a ratchet strap? Is it just a tie down with a ratcheting tightener? I have one of those and a cheater bar. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If both ToyotaÆs have their original transmissions, then the 89 is a W56-C which has a forward shift t-case and the 85 is a W56-A which has a top shift t-case. If you use the 85, you will have to convert your t-case to a top shift and maybe have to enlarge the shifter hole as the shifters are further apart.

Looks like a top shift to me but according to Marlin Crawler's , EFI ToyotaÆs came with the following:
W56-A 85
W56-B 86-88
W56-C 89-91
W56-D 92
W56-E 93-95

Maybe your is an early 89 and has a B then in which case, youÆll be fine.

It was built in 10/88 but under reg is an 89 (sold in 89) hopefully , and it does look like, it is a w56-b.so a w56-a from an 85 efi would bolt in right? the a was also a top shifter?
