Ed -

You should have stopped. About that time I was sittin' back with a cool one.

Anybody priced a chunk of 6061 aluminum lately? 15"x4"x12" = $429 + shipping

Wooooeeeee!

I don't think I'm ready for the melting pot blast furnace yet.

I thought I'd just get a good-sized chunk and cut away on it, but as much as the price has gone up, I recalculated for less waste. I think I can work with a piece as small as 3"x8"x15"... haven't priced it yet, but it should be a lot less. Before I commit to the aluminum block size, I want to receive the MP62 case to measure the volume in the discharge port - which will be deducted from the plenum volume requirement. I'm guessing there's about 15-25cid in the discharge port, but I'm not sure. Magnauson was trying to ship the replacement unit today via UPS overnight - we'll see.

Unfortunately, the machine shop I'm using will be closed from June 10th until June 24th so the owner can go to a national hot rod show somewhere.... won't be able to cut the piece now until late this month... that's ok - I can use the time for further planning/checking/rechecking/what-iff-ing/s'posing.

Since you've got some time on your hands, why don't you woodwork a solid slab of pine to hand to the machinist? I hope to get to your measurement tomorrow evening.

Oh, why don't you just call it a 300GLKEK*??

Had a day off today - so I went over to the shop... sat 'n' chatted a bit to get some perspective on all of the theory I've been chewin' on lately. I thought some of you might like to see a few of the projects underway there:

We spent an hour or so reflecting on the reality that the more we learn, the less we seem to know.

The owner leaves Saturday for the L.A. Roadster show which starts Wednesday, I think. It would be worthwhile for anyone in the L.A. area to go see the cars... probably mostly Ford Model B roadsters and hot rods. There's one car from here that the owner has spent ~$410,000 to build.

So, after plunking down $298 for a block of 6016, it was back home to find an MP62 housing waiting for me. I disassembled the MP45, swapped the bearing plate and nose drive onto the MP62 housing and started final fit on blower location and plenum sizing. I reduced the height of the plenum to 1.00":

Located the blower:
[Linked Image]
Checked to see if I was in the ballpark for this belt (fingers crossed):
[Linked Image]
Calculated the volume in the MP62 discharge port - it's 25.0 cid:
[Linked Image]
Added the volume in the discharge port to the volume in the plenum and glued in some sticks to adjust the final volume to proper size as suggested by Helmholtz Resonator Theory - total plenum/discharge port volume is now 91.5 cid - exactly 1/2 of 183 cid engine displacement:

The idler pulleys should arrive soon, so the next session should see an idler pulley bracket/nose drive brace mock-up... if the belt and pulleys will work together as planned.

Dang it..... looks like the throttle body is gonna have to move to the driver side after all. There's just not enough room on the passenger side and no way the cables will make the turns to the throttle hookup. Lots of work ahead.

It looks like a 72.0" belt should work ok with either a single or double idler pulley arrangement.... The next size that I've found is a 75.5" (too long).... a 73.0-74.0" would be better - if I can find one - since it would give a little more wrap on the fan and alternator pulleys:
