Well, the good news is that it starts and idles smoothly.

The bad news is the gas leak all over the garage floor. The gauge at the regulator read 65psi and the one in the cab was pegged at 100psi. At least one injector was leaking and given the amount of fuel on the floor, there's probably another leak as well.

There are at least 3 possibilities - none of which I'm gonna look into tonight:

1) regulator needs to be adjusted - a given, but a fast attempt produced no change - possibly I'm not using the correct adjustment procedure.
2) regulator is faulty
3) regulator is plumbed incorrectly

Hopefully, when I find the problem, the reduced pressure will not continue to cause the leaks.

Frank

Thanks, but it's gotta come apart again.

I reversed the fuel lines to the regulator and pressure dropped to 15psi. No amount of fiddling with the adjuster screw changed the pressure.... ... looked under the truck and it was still losing fuel. The #5 injector rail seal appears to be breached and spraying fuel. It may be because I had the fuel lines reversed and over-pressurized the seal - but then maybe it was damaged on installation - can't say and don't know yet. All I know for now is that it ain't right yet. I suppose I'd better order all new injector seals and gaskets.

Just a bump in the road buddie. I'd put some bigger injectors in there while I was at it. smile

I put in the 240cc injectors because I was concerned about idle quality, but it seemed to idle ok even with 100psi on the injectors. Maybe I SHOULD use larger injectors and ditch the rising rate regulator for a plain old adjustable base pressure one. 270cc injectors should give plenty of headroom at stock pressure.... they'd easily support 200HP with 38 psi.

Roll Me Over
Almost there Frank! I had problems myself when I bolted up my engine after rebuilding it. I bolted the flexplate on wrong . Only one way to fix that.

Almost, but not quite. Thinking about the location of the leak... the #5 injector is directly below the old fuel pressure regulator flange, which I removed and welded the hole. It's possible that the weld is leaking, and more possible that the heat from welding distorted the injector bung so a seal isn't possible. I need to run it long enough to make sure where it's leaking..... then find out why.

I don't know yet..... haven't had it running for more than 2 minutes... don't want to heat the exhaust crossover too much with all the gas running down the back of the engine.

Tomorrow I'll start it again and see if I can find the leak... but it'll probably be necessary (and wise) to strip it down to the lower intake, pressurize the fuel system and get the complete picture of what's going on.

Maybe roll it away from the nice car next to the Mitsu and the house before starting tomorrow?

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.
