The alternator on the DOHC mounts to the cylinder head, I would not call that a low mount. And if you want it higher use the bracket from the SOHC, it should bolt on.

I don't see how it could bolt on with 2 cams and only one hole in the bracket. The covers wouldn't fit, either.

I had in mind the 24V bracket that places the hydraulic pump up top, then again the pump mount is bolted to that bracket and could be exchanged to mount an alternator up top.
These brackets are block mounted so they can be fitted to any G7X engine.

Using the DOHC P/S pump bracket would mean a complete relocation of the thermostat and sensors, wouldn't it? Also, the front-mounted P/S pump would be in the way of the blower snout (I think).

If I can find room in the garage, maybe I'll bring the DOHC block home as something to play with for possible future options.

You should check if the yard has an acsessory bracket from any of the later engines and try a mockup. The water hose routing can be changed as I am doing on my 3.8 conversion to use a crossflow radiator.

But yes with a blower drive it will be busy up front there.

What differences are there in the SOHC and DOHC blocks? I'd be interested in the 4-bolt mains if I can use the DOHC block.

The DOHC NA has similar mains to the SOHC 12V. The turbo after 1993 has 4 bolt as do the 3.5 and 3.8 engines.

There are changes to the girdle in each engine but these are minor.
Other than the Sport engine there was another change to the blocks in 2001 as far as side bosses and oil pumps.

OK, then I can forget about 4-bolt mains, since the prices on the turbo blocks are pretty high and they're scarce.

I just hope to find a nitrided-steel crankshaft in the '95 DOHC Diamante block and hope I don't learn (the hard way) that only the VR4 blocks got the upgraded crankshaft. I'll gamble for $150 and should be able to recover some of the money if I find it's not what I expect.

Frank, sort of off topic.. but if you need an extra set of hands for anything I'd love to help! (Just as long as it doesn't involve any automatic transmission installations.)

Hi Brendan -

Welcome to SC!

Anytime you feel like driving, come on down here. I could have put you to work today at the junkyard helping me strip the 3.0L SOHC..... picked it clean in 2.5 hours. Either tomorrow or Friday, the other yard should have the DOHC engine pulled and I'll go strip that one for the crankshaft and rods.... you're welcome to come get greasy if you like.

Frank
