A MS ECU shelf was fabricated to bolt to the previously trimmed OE ECU mount:

The MS ECU is bolted to the shelf, using rubber grommets for shock mounts:

And the shelf is bolted to the OE ECU mounts:

I've had more fun doing other things.....

After 12 hours of steady head scratching interspersed with a little work, some more progress was made today. Mounted and wired the KnockSense translator - still need to find a fairly isolated place to run the sensor cable:
[Linked Image]
Added an LED on the gauge pod to show any knock that's detected:
[Linked Image]
Ran the harness from the ECU into the engine bay - still need a few zip ties:
[Linked Image]
Soldered the wires from the ECU harness to the DB37 connector and plugged it into the relay board:
[Linked Image]

That's a lot more work than it appears.

Routing looks great, but if that AMP connector is not weather rated, you will have corrosion problems in it. If you are going to mount electronics in the weather(engine compartment) then they need to have GM weatherpack connectors on them. sorry to be the bearer because I KNOW thats a ton of work. I wish I was closer to ya, and could come give you a hand with this. We coudl prob wrap it up in a weekend.

Curtis -

No, it's not weatherproof. The idea with the relay board is to make sure everything will work as intended. If not, it'll all go back to OE with the OE main harness. If the system works well, I'll rip out the relay board and harness.... and hack the OE harness. It's a lot more work this way (and probably more confusing), but since it's the first time I've tried a MS system, I want to make sure I can get back to where it was if things go south. This arrangement will work long enough to find out if the whole package is worthy. If I want it to last a little longer, I can always fill that AMP connector with RTV and seal the relay board case with it, too.... heck, the MS folks don't even put the relay boards in a full case..... they leave the electronics exposed.

There's still a lot to do:

1) I have a 3000GT VR4 fuel pump - Denso OE replacement - on order. It's not a direct fit on the truck pump mount..... don't yet know what I'll have to do to make it work.

2) I still need to order injectors..... decided to go with 360cc/min - same size as the VR4. Since the Diamante pumps out 175HP with the bigger cams, I figure I'd better allow for a bit more HP this time.... maybe as much as 250HP with boost.....

3) I'm waiting for pistons - custom forged Wisecos - before I can bore the block.... probably another 3 weeks before they arrive.

4) I may have to machine the cam sprockets to make them adjustable - don't know until I install the heads and degree the cams.

5) I may have custom copper head gaskets made - won't decide until I install the pistons and check the deck height.

6) Since I'm using forged pistons and so many parts from different engines, I'm going to have the entire rotating assembly balanced.... crank damper all the way to the flex plate..... thinking about doing some work to the crankshaft, also.... knife-edging might be a little excessive, but I'll probably get the couterweights trued (if they need it).

7) I just received an Innovate LC-1 controller w/ the wideband o2 sensor - I'll hook that up later. I looked hard at Charley's suggestion (TechEdge), but until I know more about MS, I think I should stick with what most MS users/dealers can provide advice about.

There's a bunch of work still left, so if you want to take a vacation for a few days, come on over.

Michael, I appreciate your confidence, but if you could have seen me today, you might not have been so sure. There have been several changes in the MS "Order of Battle" and there's no one to sort it out except the Chump-in-Charge. It can get mighty lonely in the garage with nothing but a multi-meter and a wish.

I spent quite a bit of time reading what it used to be and then trying to understand what it now is. In the end, there was no other way but to break out the ohmmeter and start tracing wires between the ECU and the relay board - back and forth, back and forth.... all day long

The main lesson I've learned so far is that different suppliers of MS "stuff" use different methods to wire harness connections.... actually, they use different pin connections for some of the ground traces.... so if you want to ask a supplier how something works, the "stuff" better have come from that supplier. It's sure been a learning experience so far.

I understand Frank. But I find I have to go it alone in a case like yours. Someone that is not retired, such as myself, may not have the patience for it.

Wow.... some folks under-promise and over-deliver! I wasn't expecting this for 3 weeks, but the custom forged Wiseco piston set arrived today. They sure are purty:

Now I guess I've got some work to do.

wooohoo! Frank, does this mean we get to drop that engine in sooner?

I sure hope so. I'll take the pistons, crankshaft, rods and block to the machine shop tomorrow and get the block bored, rods checked/shot peened, etc. as soon as they can work it into their schedule.... this build is gonna be a lot of back and forth with parts, though. Since the engine will be a mixed breed, I want to be very thorough with the blueprinting in hopes that it'll take some pressure and last a while.
