I just got done doing the belt on my SR, I do not care for the AC but I am getting efficient at it. Not being able to get the impact on the crank bolt had me worried but then I settled into making a spanner and the job went fine.
The timing blade on mine was giving to much advance. Enough to be out of the knock sensors range.

I would have lost a beer bet.

My curious nature got the best of me, so I tore it down tonight. What I found was a broken timing belt and an embarassing example of installer error:
[Linked Image]

The mangled bolt is a timing cover bolt. I remember when I installed the lower cover, the screws had been kept in the cover as if it were a tray. I picked out the screws, installed the cover and was missing one bolt. Figuring I must have missed one on the last install, I got an extra from my parts collection. Apparently the mangled one was stuck to the inside of the cover and never reared its ugly head until the engine was running.

This is one of the craziest things I've ever seen.... or done...... well, maybe not.

The good news is the tensioner and spring appear fine, the valve trains rotate and the damage seems to be confined to the belt and upper timing cover..... and I'm reminded of why I like the SOHC 12v non-interference engine.

Maybe I can get it running tomorrow.... if I don't hurt too bad from kicking my own

I am one of the few that due to missing ligaments in my right knee I actually can kick my own

When I was putting my SR back together yesterday I found something to caution. Mine does not have bolts in every hole of the cover since it is a swap. One must watch the metal spacers in the cover that will not have a fastener, some of them may be loose. I had one in Que to drop into the belt. As we see belts are not tolerant of debris in there.
Sometimes I question if I want to drive in headlight deep water or deep muck with a belt drive engine. This may be where the old 2.6 shines. I know mine has been fully submerged a few times.

Good luck with the reinstall, at least it is straight forward since the timing is all set.

Not that this has any good side but at least it can not be blamed on the Megasquirt as many engine issues have been over the years.

Made this spanner for balancer removal/installation:
[Linked Image]
It jams under the differential bracket for easy balancer removal:
[Linked Image]
More carnage than I thought - sprocket teeth chewed and belt guard dented. Fortunately, I have spares:
[Linked Image]
The bolt cut a large gouge in the oil pump pan flange and caused a small crack in the flange from the forward edge to the gouge. That crack should be ok, since it's all contained within the pan flange area and the gouge should stop further migration of the crack. The tensioner had a small scratch - I've polished the burrs and cleaned it up now - the seal looks fine.... the picture is before I cleaned/polished scratches:

Spanner rests on the steering shaft for balancer installation:

Now to put it all back together.

Frank, I am sure glad it was just a loose bolt. We all know you can detonate an engine internally...

I hope things work out well... I like the MS setup & thought about it a while back for another project.

All back together.

First attempt = no start - tried to catch, but didn't.... moved the distributor a little and it sounded better..... changed the trigger offset from 60* to 50*... it started and revved to 2000 rpms with -0- throttle pressure, ran for about 30 seconds and died.

That sounds like too much stepper action - Charlie, what do you suggest trying first?

Frank

Let it sit with power on long enough for the LC1 to come on line, then try it.
It may be running on afterstart enrichment and then dropping lean.
Try to watch the mixture to get a feel for what it is doing.
I have not looked at where the warmup parameters are set but they might need to be brought richer, if it is dying lean.

You can try a bit of throttle to keep it alive.

OK, but why is the idle going so high initially?

No start, but it tries about once every revolution.

I *thought* I had changed the trigger offset to 50*, but didn't burn it to the ECU, so it didn't stick. Then I tried 50/40/30/20* and burned to the ECU each time. As the trigger offset got lower, the starting attempt sounded like too much spark advance, so it's now back at 60* trigger offset.

Still, won't start. I tried opening the throttle a little on cranking - no help.
