I have a dwell meter. Want me to check the dwell on a stock 3.0 coil? I guess we'd have to convert degrees into milliseconds (microseconds?). Guessing from your units...

I just checked CAPS for the coil #s on the Montero 3.0L SOHC and the Diamante 3.0L SOHC. The coils look identical, but have different part numbers:
MD131711 = Montero MD166146 = Diamante
Mitsubishi still shows both part #s available, yet the Beck-Arnley catalog shows the same coil for both vehicles.
I have a Diamante coil - I might try it on the chance that it was an upgraded piece.... maybe it generates a better spark for the heat range 6 plugs.

Eddy, it would be better if you have an inductance meter and can tell me what the coil primary measures. Then I could run the formula for dwell time.
I've never tried to convert degrees into time-based, but maybe we could do it..... yes, the dwell values in MS are milliseconds.

Interesting...... I changed to the Diamante coil - the markings on the coil are the same with the exception of 4 small digits below the "Diamond" logo.... they're different.
It may be my imagination, but the engine seemed to start sooner and idle smoother with the Diamante coil. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I swapped a Diamante, Stealth & Monty coil 1 day to show a customer that it's all the same. I think I still have the Stealth coil in place, but am running the Jacobs setup I found in a Saab....
Sheesh.... I miss working in the junk yard !!!

If they're the same, why would MMC still offer separate coils for the Montero and Diamante?
I'm not saying one won't work in another engine, but there must be some minor difference - particularly since they have identical shapes.

Eddy, it would be better if you have an inductance meter and can tell me what the coil primary measures. Frank ole man eddy nodded off is it the black or white wire? I dont know if I can reach those wires without undoing a harness.(havent looked yet-it's cold out) have a dwell meter too and that might be easier EDIT Okay never mind -until spring thaw. I just touched the connector and killed the engine. Wires too brittle in this cold to mess with...those are brittle anyway

As a matter of fact, I did. Sleeping upright is not as fun as it used to be, either... Frank, I'm too dumb to know if I have an inductance meter. I know what inductance is, but never measured any. Remember, me and 'lectrons don't really get along...

Charlie, you might find this interesting - maybe even useful:
I've read that most automotive coils have an inductance value between 4 and 10 milliHenries. The VB921 coil driver in MS is current limited to ~ 6.5A. Using the OE spec coil primary winding resistance of .72 - .88 ohms, a 6.0A current value and the 4 - 10mH inductance limits..... and plugging the values into the MS calculator, I get a dwell range of 2.48 - 6.59 milliseconds.
If I use the mid-point values, I get 4.47 milliseconds dwell time.
Odds are, I can increase dwell time to where you've set yours - around 3.5 or so. I'll try it and see if the coil gets hot and if the engine starts better.
I'd sure like to get my hands on an LC meter for a few minutes to see what the coil inductance value really is. Would an automotive shop likely have one?

Also called an L meter or LC meter or LCR meter.
