I just used car wash soap and water, a rag and a long bore brush..... Simple Green would probably work well, though.
You do have to take care it doesn't rust. I sprayed the decks and bores with WD-40 while it was still wet, blew it dry with compressed air, then sprayed the areas to be painted with brake parts cleaner before painting it.
The white color is an old habit for marine engines in dark engine spaces. The white color makes it easy to see oil leaks...... so, I thought I'd try it on this one. I doubt it'll stay very white once it's on the road, but it might be helpful initially.

White is nice. Even road dirt washes off pretty easy, unless there's a leaker, so even washed tracks stand out. All the lines and hoses and tubes and such stand out against the white, too, making visual discovers easier.

The crankshaft is installed. The mains have .003" clearance and end play is .006" - not as good as the last crankshaft and looser than I'd prefer, but still within service limit specs: Frank

Yikes!
Today was going to be spent measuring/fitting rods, pistons and rings, but before going that far I wanted to double back and check on something that has been nagging at me.
When I took the parts to the machine shop, I couldn't remember the torque value for the main studs and told the machinist I'd call him back after I researched it. He said not to worry, he'd look it up. I figured that was good enough, given the fellow's reputation.... and when I picked up the block, I did not think to ask him what torque value he used before align honing the main bores.
All day yesterday, that kept nagging at me, so I called and asked him what torque value he used. The answer was "48 lb-ft with ARP assembly lube". <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />
That sorta got my attention, since the ARP torque spec is 86 lb-ft with ARP lubricant.
So, today the block is going back to the shop for another attempt at align honing........ this time on his nickel.
