After '86, 4cyl and V6 gears were the same ("V6" style). The housings were different and the bearings were different. See the info posted by Drew Persson in the Pirate4x4.com Toyota faq.

The pinion height is what is different between the early and later style gears, and different bearings and/or spacers can be used to make them work in different housings (again, read that faq info).

The factory 4.88 carrier is the same as the normal V6 carrier, the 3rd member housing is what is different (pinion is moved closer to ring gear), and the ring gear is thinner. Any V6 locker will fit this diff, but only factory 4.88 gears will fit it. In other words, you can change the locker, but not the ratio.

Toyota doesn't use a different carrier (aka diff case) for different ratios like Dana and other diffs do. There is no "carrier split."

I just went through all of this, as this is the 3rd member that I bought. I have a regular V6 detroit in it.
