I have an 87 runner with the 22RE and 33x10.5's. I want to regear to 4.88 and I know that was a factory option in the later 4runners. Will the 6 cyl diffs bolt right up to my existing axles? What are the differences between the diffs?

Yes it will bolt right in. The V6 and turbo diffs use four spider gears instead of two, larger bearings, more reinforcing ribs on the third member, and a slightly larger ring gear. The spline count and third member bolt pattern are the same, you can bolt the V6 third directly in place of your current third member.

I'd like to add onto this with a question. I have a V6 3rd w/ 4.10s in it. Have been told that to upgrade to 4.88 with this model requires a carrier replacement and is more costly than if you started w/ another ratio, such as 4.3, 4.56 etc. Can somebody confirm/deny this and explain?

The factory 4.88 gears are the ones that use a specific carrier, not the 4.10s. So if you want to go the cheapest route, find some thirds with factory 4.88s. If you want to regear and lock your diffs you are better off just buying new ring and pinions.

Ah, that is what I thought too. I must have misunderstood what he said... point being that if you want both 4.88 and able to lock later, better to not use the V6 3rd but stay w/ 4cyl.(?)

You can use a normal V6 third member and add 4.88s and a locker. If you get a third member with factory 4.88s and you want to add a locker you will have to go to aftermarket gears since the factory 4.88s are thicker and use a special carrier.

There is some misinformation here...
After '86, 4cyl and V6 gears were the same ("V6" style). The housings were different and the bearings were different. See the info posted by Drew Persson in the Pirate4x4.com Toyota faq.
The pinion height is what is different between the early and later style gears, and different bearings and/or spacers can be used to make them work in different housings (again, read that faq info).
The factory 4.88 carrier is the same as the normal V6 carrier, the 3rd member housing is what is different (pinion is moved closer to ring gear), and the ring gear is thinner. Any V6 locker will fit this diff, but only factory 4.88 gears will fit it. In other words, you can change the locker, but not the ratio.
Toyota doesn't use a different carrier (aka diff case) for different ratios like Dana and other diffs do. There is no "carrier split."

Just figured I'd bust everyone's chops and say that Toyota does have a Carrier Split. It's in the 8" front diff of the '03+ 4Runners, late model Taco's and Tundras. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
