I've done several of these, and only one was I able to get it loose without using the starter. You can try sticking in the highest gear (4th or 5th) and having someone stand on the brakes, that worked for me once.

The starter trick really works well, just be careful what you brace your breaker bar against, make sure it is against the frame and not near any lines. On my 86 the power steering lines were close. Just give it a blip on the starter, it should break right loose. The only one I had to really hit over and over, I finally got with a brand new Optima RedTop battery.
