I know there are many alternatives to interior lighting, the easiest way I know of is using LED's. Which I just may do one day. As far as mounting the lights on the outside of the vehicle, A.) I don't have a bumper, and B.) When I do my exterior lighting it won't be some $10 lights from Wal-Mart.
The truth of the matter is the cheap lights were bought as a whim and this was the best idea we came up with that didn't involve drilling into sheetmetal. We thought about putting them on the outside, maybe roof etc, but that requires drilling into sheet metal. I figure I will wait till I get a lightbar (which takes $$$) before I do that.
Most wheeling we do is at night, and I get out to check out every obstacle. So we thought some side mounted lights would be good to help illuminate obstacles. But two issues arise including sheetmetal drilling, and them getting knocked off by trees (trails we take are really narrow sometimes). So we figured why not mount them where they could sit inside then swing out when needed, avoiding both problems. And then an after bonus would be they could illuminate the interior when the Raider eats something (the Raider's interior has eaten 2 flash lights, and many other small possesions).
I know about flash lights yes, and yes like stated the Raider has eaten 2 of them. It was a cheap purchase to be a hold over until I can spend money on some real lighting solutions. My future plans include many lights including on the roof via a light bar, on the future ARB Bumper, and on the back via a light bar. Until then this cheap whimsical purchase will have to do, and this was the best use for the lights that we could come up with.
What the lights look like except the lens is blue:
