Getting the Wheeling Fever
Can anyone recommend a decent diagnostic scanner that I could use for my Rodeo, Trooper and Mazda Millenia?

I have a 91 Rodeo, 97 Trooper and 99 Mazda Millenia. I'm told I need a OBD1 for the 91 Rodeo and OBD2 for the Trooper and Mazda.

Yep, that's correct in that the 91 is OBD I and the 97 and 99 are OBD II.

There is no scanner needed for the 91. There's a jumper (under driver's kick panel, I believe) that you hook up with the key off. Then you turn the key to the on position, but do not start it. The check engine light will flash code 12 (1 longer flash followed by 2 shorter flashes) 3 times saying that it's in diagnostic mode, then it fill show any codes that are stored, then repeat the whole loop. Then you turn the key off and unhook the wires when done.

For the 97 and 99, you will have to have an OBD II scanner. My dad bought one from Autozone a while back and it's done what we've needed and isn't too bad. I believe it was a Sun (?) manufacturing product. The other that I've personally used was I believe an Auto X-Ray (?) unit. I used that when I worked for O'Reilly's. It's a pretty decent product, though a little pricey (at least for me) if you're going to buy it. It was about $200 and up.

You can still retrieve info from an OBD I system. Do a google search for win aldl. He might be looking for more than just stored trouble codes.

I like the Actron model cp9135. You can get one on e-bay for about $80. I have a cp9125. Its more limited in display functions, but sells for $50 on e-bay.

On the Pickups, Rodeos, and Amigos, it's behind the driver side kick panel.

On the 1st Gen Troopers, at least the v6 (not sure on 4 cylinders), are under the center console.

On the 2.6L's, there's a 2 wires you hook together to throw the computer into diagnostic mode.

On the 2.8L's (3.1's as well?), there's an ALDL (I believe that's what it's called) connector that you have to jumper the upper right 2 pins with a wire to throw it into diagnostic mode.

3.2's? I have no idea on how they do it to be honest. Haven't seen them, so I don't know for sure. Maybe someone who knows will chime in.

I know Chris has a picture somewhere on here that shows the connector for the Pickups, Rodeos, and Amigos. I'll see if I can find that and link to it ...

at least for my Trooper there is a plastic plug that isn't plugged into anything that is where your right shin is when you're sitting in the driver's seat. What I did was I got a paper clip and, with the key 'off', I inserted it into the two most outside receptors on this plug. Then turned the key to the 'acc' mode(without cranking/starting the engine) and then the CE light will blink so many times. For example if it blinks 'blink'...'blink'...'blink'...'pause'...'blink'...'blink' that means code 32. HTH.
