BTW, I thought 88 was the first year for the 3.0???? Been wrong before once or twice, tho.... Could be some carbon build-up in the M1 brain-housing group. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Well, Tag. I would do more projects if money was no obstacle and I was more mechanically inclined. As far as pictures, well I don't own a digital cameral and my work computer doesn't have a scanner, so... VicLee, thanks for the link to the manuals. I didn't see everything covered, but I'm still looking. * Fasteddy, the M60A3 variants were dated well after the good 'ol Garand was retired. The A3's were a mid to late 70's thing up into the mid 90's.
* When I shift into 4x4, with a manual transmission, all I need to do is go to neutral, shift to 4Hi or 4Low and go, right? 4Hi seems to be so easy, with no real "feel" of shifting into anything. Also, what are the recommended speeds for the Hi and Low? Yes, I am pretty new to 4wheelin'.
Thank you all, -M60

If you have auto hubs, stop the truck, engage neutral, push in the clutch, and shift the transfer case from 2h to 4h, then if you wish to 4lo. Drive gently until you feel the front hubs clunk into engagement, the "lock" light on the dash lights up, and you're in 4wd. Use only on dirt or slippery pavement. To disengage the hubs, stop the truck, engage neutral and push in the clutch and shift the transfer case back to 2h. Then drive the truck gently in the opposite direction to the direction you were last moving in 4wd about 12-15'. A careful ear can hear the hubs disengage, and the "lock" light on the dash will go out.
If you have manual hubs (have "lock" and "free" on the dial on the wheel hub center), get out of the truck and turn the dials to "lock". Shift into 4h or 4lo. Ditto on dirt or icy asphalt. Shift the t-case out of 4wd and unlock the hubs to return to 2wd.
Max speeds in gears in low range are about half the max speeds in hi range, because the lorange gear reduction is around 1.9:1. If you give me your tire size, I can compute your speed in each gear at redline and 3000 to give you some guidelines, but the tach still works in 4wd....

Thanks, so much Fasteddy. Yes, I have auto-hubs. O.K., what if the lock light doesn't come on? Sometimes yes, most times no. But I may need more familiarization, too. Does this mean I can't shift "on the fly"? My tires/wheels are 265/75-16's. Which brings up this question. Am I losing significant power with this combination? If so, what would be the optimum combo without sacrificing ground clearance? The Montero seems to require a good braking distance, which I am guessing is because of the tire/wheel combo. Thanks so much for helping someone who knows hardly anything in this subject area. I appreciate it.

No shift on the fly, stop the truck and then engage the the 4x4 via the lever. To go back to 4x2 stop the truck put it in 4x2 and back up about 10 feet.

Does this mean I can't shift "on the fly"? According to the owner's manual if the hubs are already locked you can shift from 2h to 4h and from 4h to 2h while you're moving. Can't remember the max speed for doing this. And according to the owner's manual you should always stop the vehicle when going to or from 4L. However, I don't trust the owner's manual on this one. So I have never "shifted on the fly" and never plan to. I always stop. The wheel lock light is a problem for gen1 monteros/raiders (which is what your 88 is). You can replace a sensor or sometimes the bulb itself to fix that. I had to fix mine but it went out again. No need to worry about the light as long as you can hear it "click" or "pop" when the hubs lock. You can also hear the same sound when it unlocks. Also make sure your wheels are straight when reversing direction to unlock the autohubs. Welcome. Roger

Ahh, I see you found this forum. I think I saw you posting on other forums with the same question about an 88 v6.
This is the best forum I've found for Mitsu knowledge.
There are multiple manuals on the russian site noted above. Worth staying late at work to get.

I quoted the book, except the 2h-4h-2h shift on the fly because I forgot it, since I've never had manual hubs mounted. I actually prefer to shift mine at a very slow roll, with all bind off the drivetrain, foot off the brake, a/t in neutral, and since I usually never shift into 4wd until I need it, I'm often not moving at all....
