alright, i'm tearing down the "new" 22RE that came out of my '91 truck(new timing tensioner failed, decided to rebuild the engine from amount of black crud in there) and i'm trying to figure out if i've got a virgin engine or one that's been around the block(pun intended). i could've sworn one of the old 22Rs i took apart had the "TEQ" insignia smack dab in the top of the piston, but these have nothing other than a "2" in a couple spots on top, and one has a "5" in it.

on to the rod bearings, there's nothing other than a 0H14H or something else, and a little logo that i can't really make out.

the bores still have a really nice hatch in them, and the journals are nearly pristine, although a few of the bearings are into the copper now. looks like i might have a nice light machine shop bill this time around

so what was the question?
dd you run plastigage on your rod and main bearing journals to get an idea of clearances?

nope, my question is, are there any marks on the bearings or pistons to distinguish original from replaced? i think oversized bearings/pistons/whatever usually have an under/over stamp on them.

though i'm fairly sure the bearings are original, they have the factory sizes on them(B, C etc)

the factory bearings I've seen have the toyota factory logo, the japaneese character in the circle.

Sounds like a virgin engine to me. The engine that came in my 85' Celica was all original never torn down and like what you seen...no over/undersizing stamped into the bearing half shells. On the pan rail you should see two rows of #s. the 4 number line is the spec the block was bored to IE: 2222 which means all 4 cylinders had the same bore diameter. The 5 number row is main bearing diamter for the crankshaft. Pretty rare to get one with all 5 matching.

well, now i'm convinced my engine is pure and untouched(other than by my corrupting hands ) the pistons say TOYOTA on the inside of the skirt.

i wouldn't be suprised if this one only takes a hone to fix, though a couple of the main bearings were a bit scored(journals look great)

>>>*Hi, Darin! Been missing you around here, guess you are up to your ears in designing house?

On those numbers on all the pistons and rods and bearings, all "coded" for fit?...*LOL**..funny, I have never been able to find the difference, and I can measure to 4 decimal points.

yep, my other engine had 3 or 4 different numbers of rod bearings. replaced them with std rock bearings and not a single problem almost 2 years and many 6500RPM runs later

Someday soon I will have to come down for a visit. Busy is an understatement for work right now. But I'll be damned if I kiss away another 20 days of vacation this year. Time to start taking some of it....only have 5 weeks to burn before October!

I know what you mean about things still measuring out the same regardless of the stampings....but I have to admit, that block I took out of the 85' Celica impressed me with all size "2" cylinder/pistons and all size "4" mains.

Got a call last night from my brother, seems a friend of his is hunting a shortblock for his 91'. Tossing the idea around in my head of assembling one of the two I have on hand (stock spec or .050" blocks). Only problem is...my brother and his friends tend to like getting something for little or nothing. And the way he asked "Got any of those 22RE's laying around anymore" kinda makes me think somebody is looking for something for free. Oh well...do better on the shelf in the garage than in their stinky hands. LOL

Im getting the hankering to tinker....gotta find me an 89'-95' xtra cab with dead innards to play with.

That or we can always go fishing. Care if I leave the wife behind???
