After playing around with the fresh motor and distributor I've found that I can't get it to time at 0 degrees BTDC. If I move the distributor one tooth either way I can get it timed to about 5 degrees BTDC or to about 2 degress ATDC. The motor runs great at 5 degrees BTDC but I understand that 0 degrees is ideal for the 22R. All the engine parts are new including the harmonic balancer. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is? Thanks for you responses.

Are you plugging the vacuum advance when you're looking for 0*? If it's working right on the distributor, you'll set it to 0* then hook the lines back up and see it advance slightly.

If this is an older Yota, sometimes the signal generator goes out on them.

This is assuming the timing chain is set up right, and the distributor was stabbed back in at TDC before you started.

Using a timing light, set the max advance to 28 degrees at 2500+ RPM. Road test it for pinging. Back off 1 degree until pinging disappears, if its pinging. Road test. Tell us what you think.
